resetting only the mids MPG?

Is it possible to only re set the MID's mpg indication?
My wife reported that the mpg reported went from 26 to 14 while she was driving and messing with the HFL.
I checked, and the avg mph, distance travelled etc. were all as they should have been. Both trip counters were also correct.
I drove about 35 miles over my normal route today and it went from 14 to 27 mpg. which indicates that it had indeed been re set.
I am not aware of a way to re set only a portion of the MID display

Guess no one has experienced this? Am I the first? Maybe somehow there is a hidden sequence that caused this

Happened to me a couple of time too, but I don't remember what I was messing with. And since I can't pin point what it is, I really can't take it to the dealer.

I've had the MID MPG reset three or four times in the year I've owned it. I usually keep the MID in Trip Computer mode, so I may be more likely to notice it than most. I'm pretty sure it happens when the car is started. In my case, it certainly isn't associated with anything else.

Unless you are looking at it when you start up and drive off, you won't notice.

Nothing else is reset, only the mpg.

This sounds like it's an isolated occurance...
Thought maybe there was an unknown hidden menu in there somewhere that would do the re set.
Hard to say what buttons the driver pushed...lol....one day she had the traction control turned off and was wondering what that new symbol was on the instrument display panel.
Guess she should drive her own car and leave mine alone....nah, she takes it to the filling station for me

If you push and hold the upper MID button for a couple of seconds while looking at the MPG, it will reset the MPG and the average MPH (which I do for every tank of gas). The trip odometer has to be reset separately.
Your wife may have been holding the button while looking at the MPG and reset it to zero when she was at the gas station.

And how come my wife makes me go get gas for the cars...

yeah, but he said the mph and the milage was at what it was supposed to be. he wants to know how to reset the mpg only, not the trip computer entirely.. hmm interesting. never happend to me, but i'd want to know how to do this.

My MPG resets quite frequently. Last week I was getting a 27 mpg reading, pulled into a convenience store and on the way out I was getting 9! It is slowly creeping back up. I am up to 19 now. My mid is fairly inaccurate, reading about 2 mpg high when it doesn't reset. I would say it has reset 5/6 times since I got the car in April.

It seems to reset when I get gas as well. Most times I forget to look but I'd swear that it has done it twice to me so far.

I wish there was a way to reset just that reading when I want though.

I have not experienced this at all after 1 2/3 years of ownership of 06TL. I always reset MPG everytime I fill the tank. This way, I compare MID and actual MPG (usually within +/1 .5mpg).

I may be off the track on the discussion here and if so please bear with me. But I am wondering if it may be somwhow tied to the reading on mile of travel for MPG computation. I am wondering if the hardware is computing some sort of running average and the memory is wrapping around to the beginning of the buffer and deliver erroneous reading.. Just my .02.

on the trip computer nothing should be resetting on its own
it only resets if you hold down the button

on the other trip a trip b screen where it also displays outside temperature or oil life the trips will only be reset if you hold down the button

I have not had any misterious self resetting of any kind and none is listed in the manual

as for the mpg accuracy... if you are on the highway and it says 25mpg average... go wide open throttle for 1 full minute... that will drop down to 14mpg

Yup, that's true.

That's supposed to be true, but obviously several of us have trip computers that spontaneously reset only the MPG.

Or at least none that you've noticed. I have no idea how often mine has reset in a year. I've only noticed it a few times, but since the MPG varies with driving conditions, and varies rapidly right after it has reset, it really isn't that noticable. Do you even keep the MPG showing on your MID all the time? If not, there's no way you would notice it.

None of my Acura's other problems are listed in the manual either.

I can't speak for the others, but that's certainly not the case for me. I reset both Trip A & B as well as the Trip Computer on every fill-up, unless I'm actually taking a long road trip and want to keep track of totals for the trip as a whole.

One variable: I have an '07 with Navi. What about non-Navi cars? I'm not familiar with their MIDs. So, those of you who have observed the problem, please tell us if you have a Navi or non-Navi, and what year?

Hi, I'm the OP, and the vehicle referenced is an 07TL with navi 4500 miles.
I do keep an eye on the MID. I log all the statistics because I want to personally see if there is any kind of change in mpg after the break-in oil is changed out (which is coming up soon approx 39% remaining)
At each fill-up, everything is re-set.
Anyway, glad to see I am not the only one who has experienced this oddity.
Hope you all have a Happy New Year...drive safely and watch out for the other guy

This has happened to me too and actually explains a lot. Just last week I had nearly 200 miles on my tank (and on the trip computer) and was averaging 23 mpg. I stopped at Target and when I pulled out I looked at the trip computer and it still showed about 200 miles of distance travel, but the mpg were down to 17. The only logical explaination is that the trip computer reset just the mpg as the distance traveled was still up at 200. I would have to idle in the parking lot for an hour to drop 6 mpg average on 200 miles driven.

Too bad it is too tough to duplicate and would be nearly impossible for Acura to fix...

What we need to figure out is the parameters that it's changed with. IOW, is it a time thing or a mileage traveled thing?

Well, I have only noticed this oddity about 2-3 times over the course of 8 months. It will be very tough to duplicate.

That's pretty much the same scenario I have. Once in a while, right after a stop, I notice the MPG is very low, but everything else is fine. It climbs rapidily back to a normal range, which tells me the MPG counters were reset, otherwise it wouldn't change so fast. Yet the miles traveled are not changed.

You didn't mention your year and Nav/non-Nav.

Of the two who have, both were '07s with Nav.

What about the rest of you?

I don't think it's either. I think it's a random reset when you start the car. Every time I've noticed it is after a stop. Maybe some transient voltage associated with starting. It's too infrequent to really get a good grip on what's happening.

Just an update...
Three more months have gone by and I have only seen the re-set problem (For lack of a better word) occur 2 more times.
As others have noted, it appears to happen not while driving, but when the car has been re-started after an ignition turn-off.

My wife drove my '08 TL (non-nav) a few weeks ago. It looks like the MPG reset on the car, when I asked her to repark the car for me. when I drove it later, it started at a MPG of 11 (when I was around 25). I had thought maybe she was really flooring it around the block looking for parking, but when I later got on the freeway, it steadily went back up to around 21 MPG. Must have reset.

So new theory, as the OP mentioned his wife drove the car as well. could it be something with the secondary driver key doing something to the MID?

With gas prices going as they are, these cars should have an INSTANTANEOUS MPG indicator as well so everyone can adjust their driving habits for maximum mileage. The Accord Nav/Trip computer system has had one since 2003 along with additional trip computer functions we don't have. We TL buyers pay $1000's more, and therefore have every right to expect the same or better functionality, NOT LESS.

I'm bumping my thread.....adding some newer observations...I think RandallW was on to something about using different keys

Recently, my wife and I have car pooling a lot. She drops me off, then continues to her work.
Each of us use our own key. When she drops me off, I shut off the engine, remove my key, close the doors, open the trunk with my key, then close the trunk. She has exited the car and closed the passenger door at this point as well.

She then uses her key to re-start the engine and drives off.
It's not clear at this point if she presses the remote before she opens the door.

Following this routine makes the mpg only part of the MID reset quite often, sometimes several times in a week
