Replace AT Brake Pedal?

I've got my acura race pedals, but I dont want to deal with putting mine on that brake pedal. Has anybody replaced their brake pedal or know if this is easily done? I would like to mount the acura race pedal on an aftermarket pedal with a flat surface...if it already had the same holes that would be bonus

?? Lee did you see the pics on how I installed mine?

The problem on the brake pedal is getting a flat surface to mount the pedal onto...as the existing pedal is not smooth / flat. I too was looking for something to use as a mounting or "backing" plate, and there isn't really anything good out there that will work. I suggested it to the vendor but he said it'd be too expensive.

My solution (and there is a thread on this on these forums complete with pics)... fillin the brake pedal / smooth it out with West System (which is like bondo or fiberglass). Worked great! Cheap too! (I already had the stuff from having boats - but bondo is pretty cheap).

Here's the thread...

Hehe... by the way... I noodled on this one for like a week before I came up with this idea! How to "back" the darn thing.... unless you somehow cut off the existing metal backing and fabricate a new piece (it'd have to be all custom fabricated and stuff), this is difficult to do. Maybe if you have a garage with metal fabication tools and stuff like "Overhaulin" you could do this in a snap, but I just needed a quick, simple, and cheap solution, and West System worked great!

yeah gq i saw your thread, dont really want to mess with that either. ideally i want to swap pedals and not have to deal with drilling through a metal plate...or at least drilling through a flat metal plate...

it sounds like west system is the only way. did the vendor say how much more the backing would cost?

He said he wasn't going to deal with it basically. His suggestion was to fill in the gaps on the pedal with lots of double sided tape, I didn't think that was such a great fix or idea.

It looks a lot worse than it is to be honest Lee, it took me all of about 10-15 mins to do the whole fiberglass thing. You then let it sit for a few hours and dry, but really, it was super easy!

The hardest part of the whole process IMO Was drilling through the metal brake pedal, since where you have to drill the holes ends up being in an uneven metal depression, and the drill bit is going to want to move around, that's why I started out with a center punch to get the hole started, and worked my way up to bigger drill bits, and made the final hole bigger than the screw so I would have some play for alignment.

There's no easy way to get the existing brake pedal off of the car...you're going to have to use a Sawzall or something and cut it completely off...then figure out how to bolt another piece of metal back onto the post that will be left behind. Said metal is going to have to be the same size, shape..and more importantly...curvature as the brake pedal (this is the hard part). How you fasten it on had better be secure, as you don't want it falling off in a hard braking situation, or worse..accident or something!!

There's another solution I seriously considered....use the existing rubber pad as the backing material. What's missing to do this? Longer nuts/bolts...they are special metric sized nuts/bolts (don't have the right ones at Home Depot by the way...I looked)... but not long enough. You could go online and order longer metric ones...and cut off any excess on the bolts when done. I just wanted something quick and easy and I had the materials to do it the way I did.

If you were local I'd help you do it...it's pretty easy and I have all the stuff! Good luck, let us know what you come up with!

gq, good idea (using existing pad and longer bolts). I hope Lowe's or Ace has bolts like that. :-/

They definitely won't. It's a stainless metric special sized bolt, you would either need to find a specialty metric store, or it would just be a lot easier to find them on the internet somewhere and order them online.

if they are metric bolts then try your local napa or mechanics supply house. They normally keep a decent selection of metric bolts in longer sizes
