Cool Redline Type F is amazing

Just got done doing a 3x1 with redline racing type F (53,500 miles). I love it! Even with only 1 drain/fill being done I can still tell a positive difference. Big thanks to IHC for all the good info on the fluid. Going from park to D it's even more smoother of a shift as in less of a double bump and now less bumpy/solid. Going to do another drain and fill next weekend will report back results.

Perhaps I will 3/4th switch replacement as well

Cliffs: if you're still running Z1 in your 5AT Do a 3x3 change to redline racing typeF ASAP

I was recently about to do this very same thing (57k miles). I checked a few stores locally and none had Redline D4 or Type F. I ended up buying 10 quarts of Royal Purple Max ATF (http://www.royalpurple.com/transmission-fluid.html) because it was on sale and they've got a decent name for engine oil. I haven't done the 3x3 yet so it isn't too late to go return it and order some Redline online.

Has anyone used Royal Purple Max ATF before, have any comments about it?

The only royal purple thing I would use is their oil filter.

Also I did some reading on the royal purple page and looks like the fluid is still going to contain a good amount of FM. Which is something you definitely don't want in the TL tranny. How much did you pay for the 10qts of royal purple btw? I know you can get 9qts of redline shipped to your home for around $100

Was going to put RP ATF a long time ago but heard way too many transmission horror stories because of it. Not only AZ but on domestic forums and bimmer forum

I have had the Redline TypeF for 3500 miles now and it is great! I only did a 1x3 at 38K miles and will do another 1x3 at 50k. Shifts are crisp and I can't wait to get the next infusion of the Type-F when the time comes. I'm normally on a 20K change interval but will do the TypeF in 10k increments instead until the 3rd change of Type-F. Our Pilot is going to get Type-F pretty soon too.

Glad you like it! I felt the largest improvement with the first drain and fill but there's still a little more improvement with the second. Wait until you get the switches, it will feel better than new!.

I have my switches ordered, cant wait till they get here to swap them out.

I did a 2x3 change using Z1 about 20-25k ago.... is it too soon to do a 3x3 and go with Red Line? (current mileage is 104,000)

It was on sale for $7 a qt, so $70. Given the advice from this thread though, definitely not worth $30-40 savings. Returning it tomorrow and placing an order for Redline Type-F. Thanks for the tips and sorry about some thread jacking :P

Last Tuesday I did my first 1x3 with Redline Type-F and switched out my 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches. I noticed a huge difference in my downshifts. Upshifts were always pretty smooth but my downshifts were horrible. Can't wait to do my 2x3, everyone says that is when you really tell the difference.

Go to outdoorpros.com to get your Redline Type-F. Cost me $112.00 for 12qts shipped. You can find promo codes to save like $5 on those coupon sites.

Does anyone know a good site to get the 3/4 switches for the Type-S?

I think I may need to get the switches changed since the upshift to third is slow and very harsh.

Is it worth doing a single atf drain and refill when you do an oil change?

^^^ if you are running stock Z1 i would say yes....

For the time I was running Z1 i used to do a drain and refill every 5K miles....so you pump 3qts every 5K miles.....

With redline type F i am thinking of going the distance....60K miles between flushes....so yeah instead of pumping 3qts every 5K miles for 60K miles = 36qts with the Z1 you can do the same for 12qts of Redline....

yeah, I'm just debating whether to do a 3x3 every 60k or so, or a 1x3 with every oil change.

I hate cars was saying you can probably get away with 100k changes if you use Redline and a Magnafine inline filter.

I hate cars, do you think you can take a picture of where you put your inline filter? I think I'm going to do my 3x3 later this month or early next month, maybe you can help me out if you're still in the area? Thanks!

About three quarts will drain out. Then fill with three. Then drain three. Then fill three. Then drain three. Then fill three. And you have a full 3x3 flush.

wouldnt that defy the purpose of using a synthetic more expensive oil ? if it cool if you have the extra cash and want to be super duper preventive....for ~$10/qt for the redline...$30 for every 5K miles (am assuming your oil change interval is 5K miles)...so your putting in $360 for the drain and refills....Plus if wanna do flushes thats extra....but then again its your $$$ and car....

I agree with this on all counts. I felt the largest improvement on the first drain and fill. (Others have said they felt the largest improvement on the 2nd drain and fill.) I also did the switches and the trans feels better than new. I have over 15k miles on this fluid (and switches) and I am still very very pleased. Thanks IHC!

Just did my first 1x3 at 45k on an '04. Very nice improvement. Positive and smooth upshifts at part throttle, huge difference. Of course putting the TLS rear sway and f/f coilovers on, made it that much better too lol

On your '06 there is. On the '07 and up no filter. I went with the Magnefine a long time ago and threw the factory filter away. No need for two filters.

To clarify... On 07-08, the filter is internal. It's there, but it is not serviceable.

IHC what's your opinion on adding an external tranny cooler? I know the type-s 08 has one stock but I don't think the base does. Worth it for the extra insurance or is the redline type F fluid and changing out the switches every 50k good enough? Looking to keep this car 8-10 years.

I am also going to be doing this as well in the next week or so. Where is everyone picking up their oils and pressure switches? Any good places online? I have yet to price out the switches at the stealership but I am guessing they can be found much cheaper online. My TL-S w/ 55k is not doing anything bad other than the 2-3 shift has gotten pretty lazy as has the 3-2 downshift (sometimes if can't blip fast enough and lurches).

Looking forward to this flush and switch change!

Sould I change the switch before I do my first flush or change the switches after all 3 flushes have been completed?

^^^ It doesn't matter when you change your switches as long as you do it at separate times, I wish I would have so that way I knew which feeling is different, I did everything at once and didn't know which contributed to which shift feel.

I am also interested in doing an external tranny fluid oil cooler too, somehow thinking it would help make the tranny last longer, but have came to this conclusion, say the fluid is 10 degrees cooler, will that 10 degrees save the life of the tranny for the install? Also I may be wrong, but if the fluid gets hot wouldn't the color change and burn like oil from a clear to a dark color? Having a good synthetic should be just fine.

Adding a cooler is never a bad idea. It's not as important if you're running a good synthetic but it won't hurt. I've had one installed for 3-4 years now. For the guys running stock fluid, it's a better idea. Unless you're in a VERY cold climate, run the largest cooler you can easily fit. Only the B&M style plate coolers should be used since they are much more efficient for a given size and are very durable.

Keep in mind, the cooler keeps the bulk sump temps down which is good. However, temps in the clutch packs can hit double the temp of the sump. Reducing shift time such as the Type F fluid or having new switches will drastically reduce the temps in the clutch packs. I guess my point is, I would do the cooler but I would also make sure all of the other stuff is done as well. There are plenty of rubber seals inside the trans that a lower temperature would help to live longer.
