r. view mirror autodim

auto dimming on rear view mirror doesn't seem to make much difference if button is pressed on or off.

Not sure if it's malfunctioning or not.
Anyone else with this issue?

If it is not turned on it will not go on. And when it is turned on it does just that AUTOdim, only at night when highbeams are crawling up your ass, otherwise it is not "tinted." During the day, turn it on, and put your finger on the light sensor in the back, you should notice an obvious difference.

The overall effect is fairly subtle (which is why it works well), and occurs slowly.

If you want to test if your mirror is working properly:

1) Do this during the day when there is a decent amount of daylight.
2) Make sure the Auto-Dim is switched "ON" (Green LED on bottom of mirror is glowing)
3) Make sure the light sensor near the Auto-Dim switch (facing the back of the car) is unobstructed. Better yet, shine a flashlight on it.
4) On the back of the mirror (the part facing the front windshield), there is a small light sensor aimed towards the front of the car. The sensor is in a small cavity on the back of the mirror. Cover this sensor with your finger for about a minute while watching the mirror.

You will see the mirror slowly turn "blacker" the longer that your finger blocks the sensor on the back of the mirror.

The way that the Auto-Dim works is that it is looking for a light differential between the front and back of the mirror. If the mirror detects that there is more light coming from behind you than in front of the car, the mirror will dim proportionally. The greater the differential, the darker the mirror will get. However, if the amount of light is balanced between the front and back of the mirror (like during daytime or normal night driving), the mirror does not get dimmed at all.

Cheers!

that is exactly what happens when I pull in my dark garage on a sunny day - the mirror always goes dark. Thanks for the explanation.
