Exclamation Quick Help! '04 TL Transmission issue

Quick feedback appreciated...I have a 2004 TL with 66,000 miles of relatively problem free driving, automatic transmission. Few minor things, but nothing major.

Several months ago I noticed the car had trouble at 25MPH getting into third gear while accelerating slowly. Stuttered and shook a bit. Dealer didn't find anything. Then the check engine light came on...ended up needing a new O2 sensor. I thought this would solve my problem, but it didn't. Tried different brands of gas, had other people drive it, etc.

Took it back into the dealer yesterday and they could not duplicate the issue. I went in today and drove it for them and was able to duplicate it for the tech. He immediately said it was a transmission issue and Acura had been having TONS of problems and it probably would need to be replaced. YIKES!

Since I'm out of warranty they are checking to see if Acura will cover it (after they confirm that is the issue). Anyone else have any similar issues/resolutions?

Help?

Thanks ... LOVE the forum.

crosley - please check your VIN # and look at this - it's from an Acura TSB (from my other post re: transmission)

Here is the recall info from NHTSA:

Make : ACURA Model : 3.2TL Year : 2004
Manufacturer : AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 04V176000 Mfr's Report Date : APR 13, 2004
Component: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 1099796 <---

Make / Models : Model/Build Years:
ACURA / 3.2CL 2001-2003

ACURA / 3.2TL 2000-2004

ACURA / MDX 2001-2002

HONDA / ACCORD 2003-2004

HONDA / ODYSSEY 2002-2004

HONDA / PILOT 2003-2004

Recall Number: 04V176000
Summary:
ON SOME MINI VANS, SPORT UTILITY AND PASSENGER VEHICLES, CERTAIN OPERATING CONDITIONS CAN RESULT IN HEAT BUILD-UP BETWEEN THE COUNTERSHAFT AND SECONDARY SHAFT SECOND GEARS IN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, EVENTUALLY LEADING TO GEAR TOOTH CHIPPING OR GEAR BREAKAGE.
Consequence:
GEAR FAILURE COULD RESULT IN TRANSMISSION LOCKUP, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy:
ON VEHICLES WITH 15,000 MILES OR LESS, THE DEALER WILL UPDATE THE TRANSMISSION WITH A SIMPLE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE TO INCREASE LUBRICATION TO THE SECOND GEAR. ON VEHICLES WITH MORE THAN 15,000 MILES, THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE TRANSMISSION TO IDENTIFY GEARS THAT HAVE ALREADY EXPERIENCED DISCOLORATION DUE TO OVERHEATING. IF DISCOLORATION EXISTS, THE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED IF DISCOLORATION IS NOT PRESENT, THE DEALER WILL PERFORM THE REVISION TO THE OIL COOLER RETURN LINE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 21, 2004, FOR PILOT, ODYSSEY, AND MDX OWNERS. OWNERS OF THE ACCORD VEHICLES WILL START RECEIVING LETTERS ON JUNE 28, 2004, AND ON JUNE 29, 2004, FOR OWNERS OF THE TL AND CL VEHICLES. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HONDA AT 1-800-999-1009 OR ACURA AT 1-800-382-2238.
Notes:
HONDA RECALL NOS. P30 (ODYSSEY AND PILOT), P31 (MDX), P38 (ACCORD) AND P39 (ACURA). CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION’S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-DASH-2-DOT (1-888-327-4236).

Highlights:
2004 TL – From VIN 19UUA66..4A000001 thru 19UUA66.4A014224

CORRECTIVE ACTION
Do a VIN status inquiry on the iN. If there is a C to the
right of S/B: 04-020 on the VIN STATUS INQUIRY
screen, return the vehicle to your client. The vehicle
has an updated, remanufactured A/T from a previous
repair. These A/Ts have been internally modified to
provide sufficient lubrication for 2nd gear. From the
outside, they look the same as other remanufactured
A/Ts. Doing a VIN status inquiry is the only way to tell if
the A/T has this modification. If there is no C shown, do
this corrective action based on the vehicle’s mileage:
Vehicles with 15,000 miles or less:
Install an A/T Oil Jet Kit.
Vehicles with more than 15,000 miles:
Do a photographic inspection of 2nd gear:
• Use the digital camera and camera mount in the
A/T Gear Inspection Kit to take five clear photos
of 2nd gear through the countershaft speed
sensor hole.
• Load your photos onto an iN workstation, then
view them on the workstation monitor.
• Compare the gear color in your photos with the
gear colors in the Automatic Transmission Gear
Inspection Guide packaged with the camera.
• If you decide that the gear color in your photos
matches condition level #1 in the inspection
guide, then install an A/T Oil Jet Kit.
• If you decide that the gear color in your photos
matches any condition level other than #1 in the
inspection guide, submit a completed A/T order
form, with your digital photos attached, to the
RPO Tech Line. They will either cancel your order
and direct you to install an A/T Oil Jet Kit, or they
will process your order so you can install a
remanufactured A/T.
• If you order a remanufactured A/T for a 3.2CL or
3.2TL, you may get an updated PCM and you
may also get a new fuel pressure regulator
(shipped separately). Make sure you complete
the repair by installing the updated PCM, the fuel
pressure regulator (if sent), and the
remanufactured A/T at the same time.

Mine was not part of the recall and it had to be replaced for the same simptoms. Mine started shuddering at about 55000miles. I was able to dupicate it for them the first time I took it in. Thank god for the extended warranty.

Good to hear
Did you have to tell them about the recall or did they tell you they checked it and will replace it for you anyways?

IMHO a properly run dealership should check for recalls when the car comes in with a major problem like that.. Since it's a recall and usually financially covered by Honda Corporate the dealership won't loose any money (they might even get more business because you'd end up recommending them to a good friend if you have a good experience).

NOTE:
The RECALL was only for installation of an external oil spray bar for 2nd gear

The Extended Warranty is for the trans itself
Check acura.com for a new list of included VIN numbers- since they know it has probs they just warranty it

My IMHO is that all this dual tranny i.e. Auto and Tiptronic put into one is just issues. I just had my bearings in the tranny, and some crank thing replaced. at only 30k miles.

I have noticed this too. Its shifts into 3rd gear fine, but sometimes I can feel a shudder at low RPMs in 3rd. If I give it more gas its, fine. When in the dealership for a rattle fix last month, I mentioned it and of course could not be duplicated even when I went for a ride with the tech. They claimed the car was already repaired after doing a VIN status inquiry on the iN.

Any suggestions as to what to do? Obviously, I would love to get this taken care of before the warranty is up (real soon) but what can I do if it can't be duplicated every time I bring it in?

Don't understand why after all this time Honda still can't make V6 based auto trannies. Also odd that 04, 05, 06 and 08 the AT comes from Japan, but the 07 came form US. Wonder if 07 was a test year US build out for the 08 accord tranny and all the 07 owners are beta testers...
