Question: What is this piece for?

Ok guys, anyone know what this piece under the bumper is for and what it's called? If you look under the front bumper, there is a hard plastic piece that looks like part of the underbody covering. I'm assuming it's some guard to keep debris from hitting the bottom of the tranny, motor, oil pan? Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I keep scraping it on steep driveways and I'm wondering if I shouldn't be doing that. I notice this piece on a lot of corvettes too...it's got to be annoying for those ppl as well since those cars sit so low already.

It's called a strake; it's there to help get air to the engine.

Better to scrape that than the underside of the bumper - it at least acts as a warning that the grade is *too* steep.
