Also, people that store cars and start them and let them idle for 15 minutes are doing more harm than good. Cars are not designed to be started and just idled, they are designed to be started and driven.

I agree with the majority here, start her up and maybe give the car just a little time for the cold idle to settle then be on your way normally. Your car will thanks you :-)

Hope this helps,
James
Right answer! And yes when I store my 66 Mustang, I don not start it at all till it's time to take it out in the Spring time.

You do realize that some modern vehicles will not shift into overdrive until the trans fluid eclipses a certain temp, and in cold weather that certainly doesn’t happen in a few miles, or even a few minutes.
On the Mustang, I would assume those cylinder walls are quite dry after sitting for 6 months so I hope you prime them first.

I've heard stories of people going WOT/redline on a completely cold engine because it supposedly sounds better. No joke.

I use water instead of oil. It's cheaper

Understood, but I have never had to replace a transmission in any of my vehicles so far.
Also no on the Mustang either. It's got a late model 5.0 motor (89-93). I have done this for the last 15 years and with 17,000 mile on it now, it still rums like new and no oil consumption or smoking of any kind.

Personal choice as it won't harm anything to let the car warm up, been doing it for 20 years with a remote starter on 3 of the cars in the household, not the TL.

I've never replaced a trans in any of my cars either, and that's with almost 2 million miles of driving.

Speaking of the Mustang, it's certainly easy and much better to prime the engine with the oil pump before starting after sitting for an extended length of time. No one said the engine would blow, rings would crack or walls disintegrate, just that's its much better to prime the engine with oil as the walls will dry with the valves opened and with the load on a dry camshaft it's a good idea to get oil circulated throughout the engine before starting.

Just like driving when cold, the Turbo car I have only allows the accelerator to partially open because of the need to get everything circulated and up to temp before normal driving, so it idles for a period of time. Also, the RedLine fluid in the trans is so thick that when the clutch is engaged in neutral when cold, the engine rpm's drop drastically.

So to each their own, drive or idle and I choose to idle the cars.
