Question regarding first Oil Change

hello

I apologize if this question was asked before but I couldn't search for answer

k I got my car in Jan 06, currently i have 3600 miles on it..
I went to get an oil change and service guy says i shouldn't change oil until the
car tells me to do so..
right now I am at 40% oil life..

is this true ? i had the car for 8 months and over 3000 miles on it.. and its still at 40% though

thank u

I would change the oil and filter now and reset the MID. For subsequent changes you can go by the MID recommendation or select a convenient interval. I change mine at 5000 mile intervals and rotate tires at 10,000 mile intervals.

Wow you dont drive much.

I have always been taught to change the oil either every 3000 miles or 3 months which ever comes first by my teachers. (I go to a mechanic school)
Another few thousand or a few months more is ok if you got synthetic.

However break in period should be a bit longer but i think 8 months is a bit long.

So i say change it.

I think your teachers should go back to school. With present oil and engine technology, dino oil should last 5 to 6000 miles before the additive packages wear out, and for synoils, 7500 to 10000 miles. If you really want to get educated on this topic, go to the "Bob is the oil guy" website. Lots of good info.

The main thing here is that the factory oil fill has additives to assist breaking in the engine, so it should be left in a little longer.

However, after 7 months and 3,600 miles, it would probably be good to get the oil changed soon.

Since you have so few miles, are they long trip miles, short stop and go miles, or a combination of both? If they are short trip miles, you should change the oil sooner than the MID says because that type of driving is very hard on the oil.

I just had my first oil change yesterday. I bought my 06 TL in October 05 and I just broke 4,000 miles. My MID notified me last weekend that "Service A" was needed soon so I made an appointment brought it in to the local Acura dealer yesterday. $31 (and change) and now my MID says 100% oil life.

That would be the case if you lived where theres hardly any cars around.

However in today's heavy traffic rush hour stop and go conditions the oil is put through very harsh conditions. Therefore wear of the oil is less then stated in any books or commericals. If you live in NYC and drive the car alot through that hell then changing regular oil at 3000 would be a very good idea.

Plus jw0613 doesnt drive his car much so during start up the car probably doesnt have much of a thin oil film left to lube the engine during the start up resulting in wear and if those particles get past the filter then its scratching up the cylinder walls, bearings, and what not.

Also a lot of people tend to start the car up when its cold and just go reving it above 3000rpm thats more wear particles right there.

Plus notice how you said "dino oil should last 5 to 6000 miles"
