Question from a newbie

Hey guys...first of all, thanks for helping me decide to finally get the TL. It was sad leaving my RSX, but the TL is great so far. I do have a question though...I checked my average miles per gallon today, and it says that it is 12 mpg!! I was shocked. Is this normal? I have 75 miles on the car so far. I haven't gone over 70 mph. I'm just really shocked @ this. If you guys could give me some input, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks in advance.

How many times did you start the car, especially when the engine has cooled down? Are these highway or city miles?

When you fill up with gas, zero out your trip computer, and watch the miles per gallon figure. It will start out really low, and gradually increase. This is because the TL, as with most current cars, uses a lot of gas on startup. Also, fast accelerating will slow down that increase. Then, depending on your driving, it should go up anywhere from 20-30 mpg.

Get out on the highway (a trip to Key West would be nice), put a few miles on it (speed really doesn't matter too much here because the TL will get good mileage in the 50-70 mph range) and watch the mpg start going up.

Twelve mpg is not normal, but it is too soon to really worry about it, until you have had a chance to put the car through normal cycles.

It will get better as the engine loosens up, fear not...

Yeah, I just received my car about a week and a half ago and the first day i put about 50-60 miles around town (<45-50 mph) on it. The computer registered 13 mpg and kinda got me worried. Now after a couple of long distance trips and about a week of city driving, the mpg has creeped up to around 22-23 mpg. Highway driving is great ~31 mpg and city driving has been about 18 mpg... Don't worry, it should climb once the miles start adding up. =D
