question on the 6speed...

after giving it some thought I was thinking about goin w/ the 6speed instead of the auto...but b4 I make a final decision I wanted to ask u guys on what ur views r on the 6speed....my mustang's 5speed is very jerky sometimes the gear box is long and a chore to shift and the throw on the clutch is looong...so if someone could explain to me in some detail on the TL's 6speed tranny and if its a more of a joy then chore to shift I'd really appreciate it....

Being that my old car was a 2002 Mustang GT, and I now have a 2004 TL... I can safely say that there is no comparison between the two models. The TL (IMPO) has smooth, fluid movement between gears (Although sometimes doesn't like the down shifting, but not as stiff as the Mustang was). I found the Mustang to be jerky and cumbersome at times, neither feeling I have with the TL. Don't get me wrong, I loved my Mustang, and will one day aquire a nice new Cobra; but I'll be waiting for the next redesign though, as I don't like the new look.

Personally, I would go for the 6sp; much fun to drive

But as stated by GoBig... just go for a test drive.

For me, driving the 6MT TL is a blast...but then, I don't have to commute everyday in bumper to bumper traffic. If that's something you plan to do, I'd think again about getting a MT car. Driving a MT car is something that's fun when you want to just enjoy the fun of driving, but a daily commute with a MT car might make you think again.

I used to have a 1988 Mustang LX 302 CID, the most reliable car I've ever owned I might add, and both the shifter and the clutch operation on that car was fine.. and fun. The TL is a little smoother, but the clutch action (travel and takeup lengths) is similar to my '88 Stang.

I would say you'll be quite pleased with the 6MT on the TL. Altogether, very satisfying.

TL has a short throw shifter stock, I have had Mustangs before, and the TL shifter is precise and you will not blow the 2-3 shift ever.

from my experience, the mustang shifters are very notchy. that was a big turn-off for me. the 6MT for the TL is pretty smooth. the throws are just right and the gates are pretty smooth.

i would like it to be a little shorter. i am currently considering the short shifter from comptech.

Rollin thunder, IMO...go with the 6SP! You won't regret it. It's so smooth and almost effortless. I was torn between the sport shift and 6SP and decided to go with the 6SP. I have no regrets. The clutch pedal is very light and the shifter is very precise with fairly short throws. I sit in traffic quite a bit and still do not regret it, because I always know there is a back road out there with my name on it! To me, it is definetly more of a joy and doesn't even come close to a chore, to shift. As others have mentioned...test drive one! You won't regret it!

FYI though...6SP = frequents visits to the gas station!
The TL begs you to bring it to red line!
