Put a "musclecar" owner to shame
So I'm just cruising along with the cruise set at 68, minding my business, when I come up on a MINT 64-67' Malibu SS. This thing was cherry, with a very healthy sounding small block and was being piloted by a somewhat older "gentleman". As I pass him, I look over admiringly and nod at him. He just gave me a smirk and looked back at the road in front of him.
Anyway, as I forget about him and look down to change CD's, he passes me around 72 mph, basically taunting me. Now generally, I just dismiss these things, because I like paying low insurance premiums, but this guy was just way too cocky for his polyester britches. Not to mention, I have loads of faith in the Valentine for the occasional romp. I pull out into the passing lane behind him and drop it to third, hoping he'd look in his mirror and see the front end nose up a bit. Once we got past the cars in the right lane, he got back over there, and obviously dropped it down a gear. I dropped it back into third and he hit it when my front bumper was at his door. I starting laughing my ass off when I immediately realized that thing had WAY more bark than bite! By 100, I'd pulled several easy car lengths on him and stayed on it until 110, putting him way back there. I think he pretty much gave up when I shifted 4th anyway. He kept his distance after that, even as we pulled into the city.
Moral of the story is, you never really know what those older cars have until they get on it. Some are very fast and then there are ones like this; maybe a mid 15 second car at 90 mph at best. A lot of them are just stock, or built altogether wrong. I'm guessing the latter for him. He had all the aftermarket gauges and monster tach on his dash.
Anyway, he likely won't be so cocky the next time an import grocery getter pulls alongside him. I'd hate to see what a G37, or worse yet a chipped 335 would do to his car. He'd get blown right back into the peace/free love era.

That sounds like most of the 60s and 70s Corvette crowd around here. After a while they wouldn't look in my direction.
Congrats on the kill. Those people need to get put in their place and what better car than a luxury family sedan with a normally aspirated 30mpg FWD V6. Growing up and hanging out with this crowd, I can say with a fair amount of certainty that he either convinced himself he didn't have the gas all the way to the floor or you had $20K in the motor and "NOS".

I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. In fact I'm still laughing.

As much as I'd like to disagree, it's amazing how many guys still think that muscle cars of the 60s and 70s rule. They did in their day, but there's too much technology today. Completely stock my 64 Malibu SS was a mid 15 sec car . . . but I still think they are the easiest cars to mod. That said, I still get a kick out of some guy in a mostly stock muscle car watch me pull away from them.

There are some very quick sleepers though. One that comes to mind was a father and his son in a super quiet 502 BBC with 502hp with a fake 1" tailpipe in a '68 Camaro.
