Proof of a double fuel reserve

well i finally did it this weekend past and drove her beyond the miles till empty gauge ran out. I drove about 6km after the mile to empty read zero and when i filled up it only took 54.5 litres to filler up and it's a published 64 litre tank. so with anoher 10 liters in it that allows approximately 100km of highway driving which is one hell of a reserve. I'd never take that far but always good to know.

Sorry for the shitty camera phone pics but that's all i had at my disposal.

This reminds me of a seinfeld episode.

"Kramer and that other guy, they went further to the left of the slash than anyone ever dreamed!"

Its been determined that approx 2.5-3 US gallons remain at fuel light and they dont want you running the car out of gas- so 60 miles or 100km- you can get to a gas staion on that cant you?
You can even get more than that in by topping off into the filler neck, but then you risk many dangers DO NOT TOP OFF!!!!

It should actually run out of USEABLE fuel- that can be picked up by the pump- with approx 1 gallon remaining

what are the dangers of the top off, other than spilage? i personally dont simply for that reason alone, but are there more serious side effects?

I've heard some nozzles will actually suck any gas at the top back in to prevent spillage.

even though its a 64 litre tank, you cant fill it up with that much gas. you still need room for air.

The reason you should never fully top off the tank is that all vehicles have some air space for expansion and for emissions control. If you completely top it off and the car sits on a hot day, the fuel will expand and run over. This happened to me in 1998 in my Porsche race car and I had a fire on the track - not pretty. With today's gas prices, you want the gas in the tank and not on the ground.

I am sure those fill up numbers also contain unusable fuel. That will remain in the tank no matter what, but in a position that makes it unusable. Its really tough to expect every single last drop in the tank to be used up.

I just got back from a 3700 mile roadtrip where I filled the car up 9 times and almost every one of the fillups I took past the 0 mile remaining mark. It never took much more than 14 gallons to fill it. Overall average for the trip was 31mpg, and I had one tank that was over 35, and a couple over 34. Stop and go in a couple cities and putting around town in a few places killed my overall average, but I am still very pleased.

I would have got over 500 miles on one of the tanks, but I had to stop short at about 480 because it was the last chance to get gas for about 60 miles.

I always top mine off, and I've never had a problem. I mostly fill up right before I'm getting on the highway for a long run though, so it never sits with it fully topped off.

~14.5 gal till the light comes on so ~2.5 gal of gas in resereve is right.

btw. 1 Gallon = 3.8 Liters according to the toilet bowl.

If I fill up right when my light comes on it normally takes about 13 gallons to fill.

I like the toilet bowl math.
