Preparing to do black roof vinyl, need some tips!

Need a few pointers:
1. how do you take the roof welding along the doors off?
2. what is the best way to cut it if i leave the xm antenna on?
3. does vinyl expand when you put it on? cuz i was planning on making an outline of the cut with pieces of paper taped together to cut the vinyl w/o actually measuring it to the roof.

Claybar before application to ensure you don't have any fine particulate on the roof

I got a Meguairs Clay Bar Kit at Walmart for under $20. It comes with two pieces of clay, spray bottle of cleaner to use with the clay, wax for sealing afterwards, and a microfiber cloth. Here's a pic:

1. how do you take the roof welding along the doors off?
If you are talking about the railings, you just snap it out. Use something plastic and flat the jimmy it out.
2. what is the best way to cut it if i leave the xm antenna on?
I believe the antenna is double sided tape. So use something flat and jimmy it out gently.
3. does vinyl expand when you put it on? cuz i was planning on making an outline of the cut with pieces of paper taped together to cut the vinyl w/o actually measuring it to the roof.
Best is to clean the roof with mixture of soap and water and then use a clay bar and get rid of any residue and dirts. It's good if you have another person to help you out to lay the vinyl on the roof. When you start peeling the backing of the vinyl keep spraying with the mixture of water and soap all the way. Once the vinyl are completely on the roof, use a squeegee and squeegee out all the water and bubble. It is good if you do out on a sunny day. IT WILL NOT STICK WELL if you are doing it on a cloudy or a cold day. So do it on a warm and sunny day. Good luck

The XM antenna is bolted to the roof. You'll need to remove the headliner to get to the nut and antenna connection.

u dont have to take the whole headliner off to access the bolt either..i think there if u take that light housing off u can get it from there but it will take time bc its in a hard to get place.

Thats not correct ... to get them off you tap them with a hammer and a piece of wood from the back ... they will slide forward about a 1/2 " and release from a "T" shaped post then there is 5 clips that the plastic strip rolls out of .

The full how to is at the bottom of this thread

in that post it seems like the molding at the windshield is attached more intricately, with your method, does that just detach the section of the molding along the roof?

When I did mine I did it in my garage and I only unclipped the 3 on the roof and left the ones on the A pilar then just tied the srip up out of the way with a string to the garage rafter .

I don't understand this trend. Does not belong on every car and doesn't work so well on sedans.

It doesn't have to be understood---only acknowledged and (hopefully) appreciated.
I think it looks great, especially on the lighter colored cars---WDP, ASM/SSM.
The best thing about is that you can easily remove it and go right back to stock.

OP, I have seen the metrodecals site and I am considering them. The BlueBatmobile ones come pre-cut and are a pretty easy install, from what I've seen. Please post your installation experience for us all to see.

Not a bit .. just keep the surface between the overlay and the roof well lubed with soapy water and I used a credit card with a M/F cloth folded over it to squeegie it out .

Vinyl VS Paint 101:

If anything happens to vinyl you can always take it off.
(Scratches, rips, fading, swirls ect)

Before selling car you can remove vinyl.

With paint.. Cost's more to get it done correct the 1st time.
Any swirl marks, chips, fading in most cases will result in repainting the roof.
If you sell the car and the next potential buyers hate the look your SOL.

Taking care of vinyl:

Now you would want to use any "High gloss" wax for instance I use this
Meguiars Professional series high gloss number 26
http://meguiarsdirect.com/detail/MEG+YELLOW+16

And finish it with a sealer which is:
And use Colinite 845 WAX/SEALER to give it a very wet look and keep it sealed. 1x a month if your busy but 2x a month would be better.

Another member here uses:
Vanilla moose glaze and in which he added:

"Yes .. Glazes usually have a bit of cleaners in them and do a lot of filling of very minor imperfections like hazing .. In the case of the vinyl roof you apply it inthe shade and remove it with a very soft M/F towel."

Exceldetail one of the sponsors in the detail forum here carrys the line.

How to install vinyl:

Here is a DIY
http://auto.badtziscool.com/how-tos/...-roof-overlay/

btw.. the DIY link is chopped.. Hopefully this one will post.

http://auto.badtziscool.com/how-tos/...-roof-overlay/

Important to clean the roof off and keep it wet as you go to install the overlay. A credit card with smooth edges and an X-acto knife you can pick those up at ACMOORE stores

www.acmoore.com
find a store near you.

I would suggest a helper, and remember vinyl is paper thin.

Ok where to buy?

Ordering Vinyl overlay:
www.stickercity.com
BTW This is the direct link to the overlay
http://www.stickercity.com/48-black-...for-hoods.html

From sticker city the size of sticker needed:
"BTW I measured our roofs i got 3'8.5" X 4'8"
I got the 48x72 (4x6) roll since i measured our roofs to be basically 4x5.

If you live near Jersey and don't want to attempt this contact my friend:

Applied Film Technologies
725 Fairfield Ave (rear garage)
Kenilworth, NJ 07033
cell: 973.477.6717

OR google a shop near you that deals with tints and overlays.

To remove your XM Antenna
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-2004-2008-93/how-remove-xm-antenna-709444/

MY orig. thread on overlay with lots of questions and answers
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-photograph-gallery-96/wdp-reppin-black-roofs-643074/

And last but not least the results with using correct waxes the overlay looks like paint
My detailing thread:
https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-photograph-gallery-96/zano-paint-cleaner-swirl-removal-1z-einszett-polish-colinite-845-wax-sealer-%3D-sex-719328/

I never removed those rails, I just rolled the overlay under the rubber part of those rails. c

04WDPSeDaN- that link is very good that you posted with the DIY, I think I can do this myself next year. I was gonn apay someone this year to do it for me but he didn't have a piece big enough to cover the whole roof and I didn't trust him enough to do it properly with 2 pieces.
