Power steering fluids?

I searched but didn't find solid answers.

can someone tell me if I should use honda only fluid?

Is there a quality fluid on the shelf at a parts store anyone might recommend?

Try to get a fluid that says "honda/Acura compatable" and you will be okay :)
Honda PS fluid is thinner than regular stuff, which is ATF

SharksBreath 02-28-2012 01:01 PM

i like the amsoil PSF.

3GTLCHICK 02-28-2012 02:03 PM

Any particular on the shelf stuff work well? The mechanic is saying dealer only.

Use either Honda or Amsoil. Honda is thicker than most others and uses more zinc. Amsoil is a much better fluid, will hold up better and steering will be lighter when it's cold.

I haven't found an off the shelf fluid I would use other than OEM.

^^^ I concur....thow i have experience with only Honda PSF, I will be trying the Amsoil this go around...

3GTLCHICK 02-28-2012 09:58 PM

Thanks for the advice. I will check dealer.... I need lots to flush system out, amsoil would likely be too pricey from what I hear.

swoosh 02-28-2012 10:09 PM

^^^ you just need 2 bottles :) TOPSSS

Agree. Removed my pump an and did pretty much a full flush with 2 bottles of Amsoil.

I bought a new reservoir and want to try to get out as much as possible. there has been bubbles in there for a while- I was told and it was explained to me as an oxidation issue with current oil?

Prestone has honda fluid at wally world, I wonder if its decent, at least for just a flush..

My other half swears by his amsoil transmission fluid in his GTO and Camaro, I don't want to risk it.

Maybe the time has come for a new car.

Use OEM, I had a bad experience using an after market fluid (had to replace rack & pinion assy).
Rather than flush just do a change fluid, 2 bottles,
then do another change 2 weeks or so later using 2
more bottles.

What was the aftermarket fluid? If you can't recall exactly, can you please describe the best that you can?

Lol. Bubbles and oxidation are two different things. Bubbles is aeration caused by a leak in the system. Have you done the o-ring yet? Bubbles is not a problem with the oil. Oxidation usually shows up as a thickening of the oil and it's hard to see without getting an analysis done.

I would listen to your other half, sounds like good advice on the Amsoil. I've run it in the trans or power steering for nearly 100,000 miles.

my work here is done

Majofo 02-29-2012 01:18 PM

It was some brand that was supposed to be ok for all cars including Honda/Acura that a family member was getting at Oriellys. The car was a 97 TL, it had a leaking PS hose & was needing a 12 oz bottle of fluid every 2/3 weeks, by the time I found out about it & put the hose on it the problem had been going on for 6 months or more. 3 or 4 months later the steering rack was leaking really bad & I had to replace it.
Learned the lesson the hard way, only OEM Honda PS fluid in my Acuras & Hondas.

SharksBreath 02-29-2012 08:27 PM

^unless it's safe for hondas/acuras...like amsoil is.

sounds like somebody didn't do their homework.

kingkong_dav 02-29-2012 08:34 PM

SharksBreath 02-29-2012 08:41 PM

for some reason i like kingkong_dav....he can get under people's skin without saying much LOL....

as mentioned above....i would ONLY go with recommended fluids:
Honda/Acura stuff: Recommended by Honda/Acura
Amsoil: Recommended by many members on the forum

SharksBreath 02-29-2012 09:41 PM

3GTLCHICK 03-01-2012 04:14 AM

Well, guess I'll pick it up from the dealer. Thanks guys.

The car went to the dealer a while back for a power steering recall, I dont know if the seal was replaced? It was ordered and will be put in when he does it. I dread going to the dealer, cerritos acura sucks in many ways.

JBONN 03-01-2012 12:02 PM

Went to the dealer a few weeks ago and they told me its all the same as long as it says compatible with honda's/acura's...save yourself a few bucks!

3GTLCHICK 03-07-2012 07:34 PM
