Possibly Identified Source of Rear Rattle
Possibly Identified Source of Rear Rattle
My car has had what I thought was the "rear deck" rattle from the day after picking up the car from the dealer til now (about 400 miles). I took it in to the dealer last week who verified the noise and proceeded to take out my seats and place foam in the deck. They said they fixed it, but the day after I took it back the sound came back.
I now have an appointment to drop my car off on Wednesday for their second attempt at fixing the rattle.
While driving with a colleague this morning he sat in the back and noticed that the sound was coming from the left rear headliner (near the corner away from the housing for the brake light). Sure enough, as he used his fist to push hard up on the headliner the clicking/metallic sound stopped. When he released it the noise came back. We tried this several times with the same result.
Has anyone else had a rattle from this location? If so, has the dealer fixed this problem? Can it be fixed? (I have read previous posts about headliners falling down so I'm a little worried about the dealer messing with it).
Any information would be helpful.

My car was in last week for the rear deck rattle. Dealer came to the conclusion it was the fitment of the rear sets to the body. They foamed the rear seats and put them back. Helped a bit but with a pretty hard bump the metallic click is still there. I will try the headliner trick as you mentioned above.
BTW, check all work after the dealer is finished. Not only did I spend 30 minutes getting scuff marks off leather and plastic since there were four techs in my car working the issue they also did not reassemble my rear deck properly. I now have a two inch gap between the corner of the rear deck and the back pillar. Going back today to ask them to "dissamble/reassemble". I cannot believe my dealership let that out of service with such poor reassembly. They really are an excellent service dept. I think the service manager did not inspect the work as he always does. I got to where I never had to worry and it did not payoff this time!

I too have scuff marks and some grease spots on the seats that I will clean once this rattle is fixed. I'm hoping my car doesn't look beat up after the repairs, but it will be nice to drive with a reaonably quiet interior.
I have had the same problems too starting exactly the day after I picked up my car... I had a similar issue with my brand new 2002 nissan altima too (rattling in general) and after going back and forth I gave up on the dealer... I realized if there is a rattling problem from factory, it's most likely not fixiable by them and somehow you gotta fix it yourself, by maybe taking some parts out and dynomat them...
so this time, i'll give dealer a chance to fix it. If they can't fix it, which i'm sure they can't, I won't be going back to them for the rattling problem
and try to just dynomat the whole rear deck... and I will try that trick that you said too
