Please Help

Hi,

I am shopping for an 04 Acura TL and I have come across one for a really good price. The only thing is that there is 82,000 miles on it.

MY QUESTION IS: Do you think it is ok to buy this car with such high mileage? I am absoultely in love with the car but the only thing I am iffy about is the mileage. Should I let this be a major factor in my decision?

Thanks!

Hondas and Acuras are known to be very durable if the owners take good care of the car.

If you can get a record of the services performed on the car and everything looks to par, I wouldn't see why not. If you cannot, it would be questionable.

Personally I wouldn't buy a car with such high mileage.

BTW, How much are we looking at here?

Price? Private party sale or dealership? Get the service records on it and get a good buddy to test drive it along with you.

The wholesale price on this car is about $13,700. At or around that price you would have a good buy.

Have a professional mechanic put it on the rack and test drive any car you are seriously interested in

Call Acura care at 1-800-382-2238 x 5 and give them the VIN- they can tell you of any warranty repairs made or extended warranties on certain parts

I am located in the Philly PA area so prices of cars seem higher than other places in the country.

Anyways the car is $19990 from a Volkswagen dealer. KBB says the car is worth around $21000 with that many miles. I have searched tons of other places and the next lowest car I can find is $22900. So I thought that $19990 was a really good price, but a questionable price if ya know what I mean.

Thanks for advice, I def will run a history on it, and also see about an extended warranty just in case.

Hondas are very reliable, but I personally will not buy cars with such high mileage. Also it really depends how well the previous owner took care of it, definitely run Carfax. I got mine Auto 04 one owner with 39xxx for $23,500. I would personally pay a little more for less mileage. Good luck, you will love the 3rd Gen TL.

car fax reall isn't the best source if you want to know weather the car has been in an accident. Take the car to a good bodyshop nearby and ask them if the car has had any bodywork done on it, any frame damage, etc. Also take it to an acura dealership and have them check it out as well. Also good suggestion to call acura client services to ask for what work was done.

good luck finding 04 with 80K mi for 13K, only if it has a salvage title. I would say the fair price should be around 17-18K, no more than that, but I'd def stay away from it, no matter if its a Honda or a Lexus.

Hmm.. .$20K still seems a little expensive for an '04 with that many miles.

Check out The 3G TL Owners Signin - Page 43. Three members got their '04 for $17,500-$17,900. I'm not sure how many miles were on their cars though.

229 acura tl's have gone through auction this week. (across the nation) the ones with that mileage have averaged around 17450... What that means to me is that if they are going through auction at that price, it would seem reasonable that with reconditioning and dealer fees that the car would be around 19000 or maybe just a little less.

If it were me I wouldn't consider the car. too many miles... acura won't allow a dealership to certify a car with more than 80k. there is probably a good reason for it.

Before you buy it, take it to an Acura dealer and have them check it out. Thats what I would do before buying a car with high milage. Yeah, you can say that the Volkswagen dealer checked it out but, he doesnt know what to look for. Heck he could be looking for a turbo for that matter

I said that price of $13,700 was a wholesale price not a retail price. I will bet you that that car dealer didn't pay much more than that for this car with that many miles on it. I deal in a lot of used cars and am pretty in tune to the used car market. With the car being wholesale at $13,700 I could see a dealer asking $20,000 for it on a lot after refurbishing for sale. I still say $20g is way to much for this car. I would start low and go up as needed to get a good price but I wouldn't pay almost $20g for this car. If I were a retail customer this may be a good buy at $16,000 but not much more. If I purchased this as a used car at auction I would stop bidding at $14g.

For purposes of comparison, I paid $17,825 for my '04 TL with 49K miles on it. It was a private party sale, not from a dealer.
