PLEASE HELP! 04 5AT owners

How many of you have transmissions that whine so bad in first thru 3rd gears that someone on the other end of the phone can hear it?

I had my transmission replaced at 60k under my extended Acura warranty for a shudder between 3rd and 4th. Every since then it whines really bad. I have taken it back 3 times and tell me it is normal. I need to know if everyone's whines because the Acura distrct rep is going to be there tommarrow. I don't want to look like an ass, so... does every 04 whine like a wind up toy??? Mine didn't before the tranny replacement! Please help, this is driving me crazy!! I am falling out of love with my TL because of this.

Re:04 5AT

I'm at 41K...no noise that I can recognize. I'd say you have a problem.

I'm at about 36,000 miles. No noise like you describe; only the sweet whine of the CAI.

Exclamation 04 TL auto owners - beware

We had our auto trans replaced about 6 months ago. There was a gear whine. Unfortunately, it was out of warranty at 55k miles. However, Acura stepped up to the plate and gave us a free transmission, but we had to pay about $1300 for the dealer to install.

Anyone with an auto trans: get it inspected independently from an Acura dealer before the warranty is out! Listen carefully for any unusual noises!

My TL had a slight whine from the time it came from the dealer. It is normal and it had no effect on the function of the transmission. When I traded my car at 56k miles the transmission was as good as new.

I'm at about 25K on my 05. There is absolutly no sound coming from the transmission, nor from my 02 MDX. My Legend had 165K and that tranny was silent too. Perhads yours and NBobs ware at the outside edge of the specifications. I don't think it is normal or acceptable with a tranny design that has a history.

I have a whine coming from my car now too... but beyond the whine, no problems. The whine is most noticeable when accelerating from a stop.

My GM transmission whined from a stop when it was a quart low on fluid.

Yes, I've owned two Chrysler products in the past, both with 100K miles on them before I let them go and I haven't had any transmission issues... which is a blessing with Chryslers.

I'd say you have either a dealer-created problem or something is up with the replacement transmission.

They are also going to fix my rear defrost (its not working) and a interior light bulb on the #2 button of the memory. The best thing is that my awsome dealer (Price Acura in Camden) gave me a. 07 MDX to drive. I will have to give you guys a report on the new MDX after a few days.

I've got an '05 with 27K miles on it and the only whine I hear is from the wife bitching that I won't let her drive it.

Seriously, no tranny noises, and no door dings from the wife's parking lot practices.

No problems with my 04. I've only had it for about 4 months though. When I was shopping for a TL, I did test drive another '04, an '06, and quite a few '05s. The thing I noticed was that they all tended to have what I thought was excessive wind/road noise. When I asked the dealer about it, he gave me the line, "Yeah, that's just the nature of the beast".
However, the one I bought (from a different dealer), does not have excessive road noise nor does it have a whiny tranny.

38,000 transmission is fine. Based on the info in 3G garage I refreshed the fluid @ 30,000 and will plan on a full change @ 60,000 if I still have it. No time for whiners.

In the sticky, read the latest Acura ServiceNews bulletin. They stated that a transmission whine may be normal.

My car's in the shop for a transmission replacement as well. It started to whine from 1800-3000 RPM. It was most noticeable from 1st to 3rd gear since when you're in 4th and 5th, you're going so fast the road noise takes over. However, I could hear it in 4th and 5th as well when on a newly paved freeway.

In any case, the car was starting to exhibit other signs of transmission failure (slow gear engagement, a large clunk and shaking of the car from time to time when switching from P -> R) so I took it in for a transmission replacement this week.

Here's to hoping that the reman transmission will not whine or exhibit any of those other problems. When was the first transmission replaced for you (roughly at what time this year?) Do you notice anything different between the first and the second in terms of shifting, aside from the whining?

Isn't the tranny covered under the powertrain warranty, 6 year/70k miles?

Is the powertrain warranty really 6 years, 70k miles? Or is this a recent change?

Update: it looks like the 2004 only had a 4 yr, 50,000 mile powertrain warranty. I guess they increased it for the 2007 model year.

The first tranny was replaced about 2 in a half months ago with 55k because it started shuttering between 3rd and 4th gear. It was covered under my Acura extended warranty. The second tranny was done this week with 62k because of excessive whining. Aside from the whining it shifted normal. The fact that it was shifting normally was why I had to take the district rep for a ride. Thank goodness he aggreed with me that the whine in mine was not normal.

My Bad... the warranty for the 2004 was only 4 year, 50k for both the bumper to bumper and powertrain. Shame, isn't the powertrain supposed to be longer than the bumper to bumper????

Do a little research if they are trying to charge you. I think some early 04's were covered with the extended warranty that included 01-02-03 TL's and Accords and MDX's with the 5AT. I would push hard to have it covered by Honda/Acura, warranty and mileage be dammed. This @#*%ing transmission has a long history of being a piece of trash. I had hoped that the problems were history.

Many have been replaced with over 100K miles, some multiple times. Please, all that have problems, keep us posted on your progress.

Just as an FYI, I had my 2004's transmission replaced twice now.

I'm hoping the refurb that they put in will last me for a very long time.

I have an '04 5MT. I too felt my car shuddered in 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. It has happened only a handful of times in the past 2 years, so I'm thinking it's not that serious...yet. (knock on wood)

My 04 TL 5AT has had intermittant shuddering when going from 3rd to 4th. I've had it to the dealer twice, both time NTF. I've also engaged ACS and have an on going correspondance with them. The dealer did do a triple flush fill at 30K, which helped a little. At 60K, (I'm at 45k now) I'll triple flush fill with Amzoil and hope for the best.

My automatic 04 when I drive and feel the car change gears from 1st-2nd-3rd in transition to each gear I feel the car shudder a little bit. A type of feeling that the car is getting ready to stall. Should I have my dealership take a look at it? It happens sometimes.

^^ Yes.

A few users have had the 3-4 shudder and it is NOT fluid related, especially if you had the fluid changed @ 30k and it did not helped.

The 3-4 shudder is a sign of failure and we've had a few owners that have had their transmission replaced because of that problem. Have the vehicle checked by a different dealer ASAP.

The best way to duplicate the 3rd to 4th shudder is to:
with the car COLD drive normal for about 2.5 miles, then stop and take off very gently, so gently that you can feel every shift, when you get to third pay very close attention before it shifts to 4th. If your car has this problem it will shudder in this window. If you feel it you can duplicate it 2 or three more times untill the car get hot and then it won't do it again untill it cools off. This is how I was able to get my Dealer to feel the problem. Yours might not be the same, but this is how my TL behaved.

Could you elaborate on what you mean my shudder please? From 3-4, my 06 5AT occasionally "jerks" into gear. Basically, it holds the 3rd gear longer than expected, and then goes into 4th gear. Its not a hard jerk, but noticeable in the winter and when takin off really really slowly. Its very difficult to replicate and does not happen often. I always brushed it off as me being entirely anal since when I tried to point it out to my family, they wouldnt feel the "jerkiness" in shifts.

DAM, I have 45,500 miles on my car and my warranty is almost up. I need to call my service advisor tomorrow and set appt so they can take a look at my car. So this jitter in the transitioning of each gear is a sign that the engine/tranny is about to go out? What do they actually replace the enire tranny? So if the tech tries to give me B.S. what should I say or do?

Just save your self some hassle bro and buy the extended warranty! Acura tried to charge me $ 2,800 for extended warranty that only hit like 98,000 miles. So I called my friend from a dealer in TN andn I got it for 800 dollars from Acura/Honda car care! I bought mine used at 51000 miles so now I am at peace if anything happens. Plus its worth it in the long run
