Plasti-Dip Painted Grill

Done deal. Here's what I did, and what I learned.
I pulled the bumper off, disassembled the grill fully. Here are the parts that I painted and didn't paint:
Pic #1
Pic #2
Pic #3 - Note the bumper in this pic has been cut, yours will have a bar going across between where those 2 chopped up areas are... not necessary to paint that bar really, it will be covered by the silver bar which we're painting
I washed the parts with soapy water, dried, hit them with some 200 grit sandpaper, washed/dried again, sprayed with a plastic primer, let it dry, then a few coats of the plasti-dip.
I'm not convinced that disassembling everything is worth the trouble. You still have to tape off the bumper. I'm also not convinced that its worth painting the "paint this" area from pic #3. If I could go back I would just paint the silver bar and leave the rest alone to see how that looks.
It got too damn cold tonight. This is definitely not a job to do in the cold weather. I was in the garage but it wasn't warm enough. When spraying the last coat of the plasti-dip it came out in globs sometimes. Definitely don't try to force this job if its too cold outside.
In any case, I really like it, and I hope that it will hold up.

Looks good in that pic stvetch!! I'm thinking your right though, masking off everything and going after it might be the easiest way to do it. Definitely a good write-up though, thanks! I'm not sure if I want to tackle it this weekend or not...looks damn good that way

Thanks man.
If you have removed the bumper before (i.e. the bolts are going to come out easily) and you have the time, I'd say pull the bumper and disassemble the grill, paint just the silver part, and then reassemble.
If you're pressed for time, or your bumper is rusted to the car, you can definitely get by with masking off the front end and spraying it.
It really isn't that hard, considering I got about 3 hours of sleep last night, got called into work, worked half a day, came home and did this, and then wrote it up with the pics.
Now excuse my while I PTFO.

Hey Myron, how much was a can of that stuff from HH?
I'm thinking about repainting my rear bumper as it's chipping (I painted the center portion of my rear type-s bumper)

Wow, very impressed.
Very nice job stvtech and myron!
Any pictures of the whole car, and not just the grill?

Did you also paint the area in this picture where it says "don't paint this"?

No pics here because I haven't put the bumper back on yet lol. I took off tomorrow morning from work so I'll put it on and get some pics in the morning. Myron did paint that part pictured.

Yeah that section that I didn't paint is behind everything else and IMO not worth painting if you are going to disassemble. If you're going to just mask off and spray bomb it, theres no sense trying to avoid painting that part.

Of course it had to snow last night, so I had to put the bumper back on a snowy car. FML.
Here it is! (I know I know... I'm still trying to get over to the dealer and grab 2 WDP plugs for those holes in the bumper)

Just did mine today, I will take a picture of the whole car with it, its dark right now and the picture I took didn't come out very clear. I removed the bumper because well its pretty simple I think so just disassembled everything and took the (A) off and put the silver bar back on and taped up, and painted away. Make sure you do what myron said and use a razor when removing the tape because the paint will peal off with it.
Has anyone been driving around with it on? Was seeing how it was holding up? Also if so, did you happen to go through a car wash yet with it and did that peal it off?
Will post pics of the finished project tomorrow but this is what it looked like before I started.

I did add the silver bar back to the plastic before I started painting. Didn't realize I took the picture before I put it on there. The (A) still wasn't put on though

Good job. I've been driving around with it and it is holding up 100%. I have gone to the do-it-yourself carwash and haven't had any problems. I wouldn't hold the power nozzle right up close to it, but I wouldn't do that to any kind of paint! I did the "V" shaped trim under the grill just the other day. I thought the stock color clashed with the CF hood.

stvtec, looks good and thats good to hear. We will see how mine holds up, but the great thing about this is, if I do need to redo this its not like I am worried too since it was simple/and cheap.
(stvtec, looks like its time for you to do the CF roof now)

Thanks guys. I plan on doing the black vinyl roof. If I were going to do CF roof it would have to be real, not a CF overlay. Since that would be a huge undertaking I'm just doing it black. I want to get a quote for having the edges of the hood painted to match the car, meeting up with the grill. Like this (the original pic was all crooked so I had to straighten it and fill in the corners just so it would look somewhat OK):

^I agree with that...
and since it's partial carbon fiber on the hood, I'm assuming THAT is a vinyl? If so...then just use the same one for the roof. It's a look, I don't think any of us are that weight/performance conscious to be converting roofs to actual carbon fiber anyway!

I'm pretty sure that pic is a real CF hood, and maybe the sides are vinyled but if I had to guess I would say painted. Maybe I will play with some photoshop of a black roof and painted/unpainted CF hood. I'm still really liking the edges painted to line up with the grill.
Yeah I'm not crazy about the idea of a CF overlay on the roof. Adding CF overlay to stuff is ricey to me. Granted many people would argue that the CF hood is ricey, but I guess its just a matter of preference!
I'm not sure what you're saying about the partial carbon fiber vinyl thing.

@quanaman: it would work great for coating the intake pipe
@rockstar143: I figured out what you meant. You're saying maybe that is an OEM white hood with CF overlay on the middle? It could be, but you can see the hood pins which would be REALLY ricey to put in an OEM hood.
So after the chop I still like this look. It still appears to line up with the width of the roof from the front angle. Notice the far end of my hood in the above pic looks way wider than the roof. This brings it in line:

I am pretty sure that's a real CF hood on that other white TL. And I think he painted the sides, not vinyl wrapped them.
@stvtec I see what you mean that the hood is wider than the roof. But I meant that the roof line flows well with the windshield that blends into the lines of the hood. I don't know it's just a personal preference.

Fo sho! We can voice our opinions and preferences without getting into flame wars around here. It's nice. I definitely see what you're saying about the overall flow of the hood into windshield into roof. I'm going to get a quote on the paint, and I want to do hood pins as well to pull the hood down flush. It sits a bit high on the driver's side and it bothers me.

You did interpret what I meant the second time. I figured if he went carbon fiber he would have left the entire hood that way and NOT painted the white back on it.
Anyway, yeah, doesn't look bad, just not my cup of tea.
After doing the amber portion of the type s diffusers in my headlights in cf overlay I will agree...this stuff exposed and touchable might look a little questionable on the car.

What if you do the white stripes on the sides, but wider in the front and tapered to the back. Hard to explain
At the front of the hood, match the stripe up with the bumper/grill (the way it is in the latest pic)
At the back of the hood (where the hinges are) make the white taper out to the very end/corner. That way at the back the black would be exactly as wide as the hood and roof, but in the front, it would flow perfectly into the grill.
Hope that males sense. Best of both worlds IMO

^ Yeah that would exactly be my concern. Also to make a straight line it would have to "leave" from the front at an angle towards the rear corner of the hood which I think would look odd. I like how it looks leaving the front parallel to the edge of the hood.
I suppose there's nothing stopping me from trying this look with some masking tape!!
