Which parts would you snag?
Been lurking for 3 years.. finally registered. Hello to all.
I have a 2004 with about 140k that I totaled a few months ago (flipped it trying to avoid a deer in the sleet/snow). I only had liability on it.
Today I'm going to hopefully get a 2007 with 98k miles. I'd like to remove parts from my 04 that I could use in the future . I've already removed some of the basics..radio,hid bulbs, etc. I thought about removing the engine but it seems a little more involved than what's it worth considering my skill level and time. My skill level is alternator/starters/brake jobs lol. Just seeing what some of you veterans would snatch off if in my situation. Thanks in advance.

Burning Brakes
Glad to see you ended up okay, that's crazy.
So honestly, if you do end up with an '07 w/ 98k miles, I'm gonna guess that nearly everything on that car is in better shape than what is currently on your '04. Yes, I'd grab both head and tail lights (just for the sake of resale value). Are the interior/exterior colors the same? If you flipped your car I can't imagine anything on the exterior is reusable....are the wheels trashed? If the interior seats are in good order I would take those all out and keep them as a set.
If you had a manual trans, I would try to salvage the brake calipers and discs if possible but that's just me.
As far as the engine goes, the chances of you actually needing a spare engine to swap in is slim to none - you just gotta take care of your current one and it will last you as long as you need it. I guess it really just depends on whether you're interested in getting a bit of money back from selling odds and ends parts.
Good luck with it all!

Yeah you're right about it would've been better to smack the deer and just replace some of the front end. The roof is smashed .
I had a similar feeling about the engine..if I take care of the car..it would probably last me a good 5-7 years at the rate I drive. No need to have an engine taking up space .
Interiors are the same color. think I'm going to see if there's anything I need but this one seems to be in better overall shape so probably not much.
Thanks again.

I probably wouldn't bother with the engine either but you could remove some components and store them as extras if you had the room. Radiator, alternator, brake rotors and calipers, power steering pump, brake booster/master cylinder assembly. fuel injectors, etc.
