painted calipers (brembo).. any success stories?
Looking for some success stories w/ painting the OEM brembo's. I've searched alot and only found of people doing it w/ 5AT brakes. Some are good and some are bad...
i've been thinking of a sick color to paint mine, but i want it to look pro. finished. perfect. might even do some kind of decal work....i dont want it to be rough or drippy or black unpainted spots spots....
anybody got pics ?? please share....

I know it's just a low-ly 5AT, but I can offer this... Take the calipers off and do it right whatever you do... Don't try and paint over as is suggested in the directions of most kits. Take the time, and I think they'll come out nice. In DIY form, I think the products are good... If you want "show form" you'll need to do a bit more work.
Mine are still a bit fresh to provide any input on longevity, buts here's some of my experience and results.

thats a pretty damn impressive finish it still has a bit of a 'coarse' look to it, but i believe thats just the surface of the 5AT brakes. the brembos are very smooth as were the rotora's i had. i definitely want a perfect job like that but i intend to do some completely original w/ the paint colors and look... thanks for the input
how long did it take each coat to dry? do you recommend any sanding for a 100% finish?
anyone else?

I know the pictures arent too great but I thought id share em with you.
It took me about 1.5 hrs to do the whole thing, and i recommend you sand the calipers first.

wow blackura, you got balls to risk fing with the look of the brembo's. I've got them too and just duplicolored my rears to match. For prep work I used a wire brush on a dremel tool and they came out good, I doubt I'll have issues with the finish. I would imagine to take the finish off the brembos you would need to sand with 320 grit and work your way to 600. Also I don't think the logo is a decal but rather a 2 layer paint job. I.e. you paint the caliper white, then lay on an acura decal, paint the rest black and peel up the decal to reveal white underneath then a few layers of clear. I would bet to get the look your going for it would be at least a full day affair if not longer.

If you have painted brembos on there now and want to paint over them... I would clean them thoroughly first, I spent all my cleaning time the visible parts cause the inside of the caliper isn't visible ---->>> Though I've been anal enough to shit like that before. Next, I would lightly sand the surfaces to be painted with like 150-220 sandpaper so the paint has something to adhere to, then clean them again real good before applying paint.
When I did mine, I just took the car out of commission for the day... I wasn't in a hurry to get them done, so I goofed with them a little here and there throughout the day... I can't say for sure how long it took. But the paint itself pretty much dries to the touch in about 1-2hrs... At the very least you can do like I did and just do one axle at a time. When the paint dries enough, carefully reassemble while wearing latex gloves (add no hand/skin oil), then you can put the tires back on and start the next axle while the other dries... Go to sleep and the next morning they'll be dry enough to drive on, though I'd try and avoid really heating them up for the first day, but the heat cycles help bake the paint.

Forgot to mention... The paint used in the kits is like an epoxy in some form... I think the G2 kit may even be 2-part? Whatever the case, as I mentioned the paint flows "capilary like" so you do not need to "over-brush" when applying. Once it's coated and spread evenly, don't touch it! The paint fills in and kind of levels smooth, giving the shiny smooth finish... Just coat, make sure there's no drips and leave it alone.

04WDPsedan... you didnt sand your rear calipers, did you? because it still looks really really coarse... the brembos already have a smooth finish, where are as the rear & 5AT front brakes have a coarse finish...
basically i want to paint my brembos, but i want it to look factory smooth. i while work something out w/ the decal and lettering (2 layer paint seems to be best)
just wanted to see some pics of finished jobs.

Powder Coating (as I understand it):
You set a small electrical charge (neg I think) in to a metal part. You then disperse a pigmented powder with a small (pos) charge onto the metal part. Once evenly coated, you bake the part to cure the Powder Coat.
The dispersing equipment is similar in appearance and use to a paint gun/air brush type system. In effect, you paint with powder.
Depending on the specific chemistry of the powder, you will get more or less durability, more or less gloss, more or less chemical resistance, etc.
To the best of my knowledge it is not DIY.
Here's the Wiki article on it:

You should just google "Powder Coating Long Island". I'm sure you'll turn up plenty of leads.

What you're talking about with powder coating is removing the calipers, sending them out and having them redone, THEN "cleaned" so that they go back together correctly and still function as brakes. Powder coating is a piece by piece process and you'll pay to get it done correctly, unless your "real" handy.
There are kits, I think Craftsman even has one... But you need to bake the result to get the finish. Unless you have a stove readily available (sure use the one you cook pizzas in, yuck) you're SOL... Although, I'm ahead of ya... A "toaster oven" would work and calipers aren't that big AND toaster ovens are like $25 at Wal-Mart.
I could go further... The rears... I didn't realize the brembo kit came with 5AT rears? But if you want to get those SMOOOOTH... forget sanding, take them apart and have them bead blasted.

Burning Brakes
HMMMMM...
I have been thinking about it for awhile..... Painting mine DMM to match up front on the brembo's would look NASTY....
I think i might try this weekend... doesn't seem to hard for some reason..
I am going to trace over the "ACURA" part on the front calipers and then cut out the trace to make a template to transfer back onto the caliper once i paint the entire caliper one color.. This should work, just need to figure out what paint to use to start this with,,,,

for the emblem portion, you might be better off painting over a decal. if you want the word ACURA to be black or white, paint that area, or the whole caliber... put a decal over it, then paint the whole thing the color you desire, and peel off the decal! should work find. probably an all day job if you are going to do it perfect

Awww, wtf, it'll give you something to do. While you're in there, might as well install some After Market rotors and bleed the brake lines.

You've got to get back on the horse, man...especially since what happened was no fault of your own...you know what you're doing/what to do...no reason not to do it.

Yeah, I remember. I was just fooling around; I know you liked that car and the accident was actually pretty serious. I know you'll do whatever it is you're working with an appropriate amount of caution and consideration.
I am looking forward to seeing whatever it is you've got planned.
I think I've heard of people having their wheel powder coated for about $100 a pop. Not sure if something like that fits with your plan or not.
