Paint Spill

Figured I'd share what happened the other day. Truck went around a corner and a 5 gallon can of paint fell off and exploded on the road. My car was hit. Guy was very nice and stuck around until I went out to my car.

I have better pictures on my friends phone, but this pretty much shows where most of the paint wound up. There is quite a bit on the top of the trunk too, and on the roof.

I went by the body shop today to speak with someone. He told me the paint should come off without leaving any blemishes, etc. Won't know until the process is done though.

Crap, I thought I put that down. It is latex. Washing the car and scrubbing with soap did absolutely nothing. I'll see how a clay bar does once I peel more of the spots off.

Let a body/detail shop do the job. They will be more cautious with the clear, etc. They may have a solution to remove the paint.

you should be able to peel it all off. The clay bar will not help until you get the paint off. It might help if anything is left behind. I would just use a finger nail and try to peel as much off as you can. The paint should not stick to the clear coat or wax very well.

I got all of the guys info. A cop stopped as well to deal with the paint on the street.

The paint seems baked on pretty well. It comes off but is time consuming. The estimate will be sent to me tomorrow and then I'm going to call the guy. I don't imagine he would want to use his insurance if it is under 500.

Wow---tough break, but you're lucky the guy owned up to it.
Keep us posted on this please. I would like to know the method of removal and final cost.

But at least it's water-based paint rather than oil-based.

^ - Decided to go that route after trying to get some more off late last night.

The guy didn't say there was any sort of magic solution but it seems that the paint/clear coat will show blemishes if it is rubbed too hard or too much pressure is put on with the cleaner (whether it be a cloth or orbital).

Waiting for the estimate to come back to me so I can talk to the other guy and see if he wants to go with his insurance or just pay out of pocket.

Great excuse to drive any of the awesome cars in your stable...and also be glad it didn't happen to any of them.

I'll check it out. Keeping it relatively stock for now. In the process of building an IC and working with the electronics but nothing too drastic.

So the body shop isn't going to do the work, they said it was best to contact a professional detailer first. The detailer said he would probably need to wet sand the areas to bring the paint out. All the crap that he had in his truck wasn't removing it. He said if the wet sand doesn't work then the shit needs to get repainted.

At least dealing with the guy's AAA insurance has been very easy so far.

Your car was at the wrong place at the wrong time. At least the guy was co-operative and you have a Supra to drive around now!

Didn't work. The detail guy tried a few things that he had in the van and nothing seemed to take the paint off. Will be speaking with him later today about when to set up a time for him to go over everything.

I'm happy that the guy stuck around. He could have easily driven off. No one in SF pays attention to anything so I would have been out of luck.

1000 bucks to remove the paint. Now I just need the other guy's insurance to approve it.

Decided to give the removal another shot myself. Took about 6 hours but most of it came out. I would take a better picture but my g/f needs my car today b/c her M6 yet again needs some work done.

I'm still going to have the detail shop give it a good cleaning, but the quote is 150 now, not 1000.

You should've yelled at the guy for not carrying around a 5 gallon bucket of black paint! haha jk. Man I could only imagine how time consuming that was.. removing VHT from lights was a PITA and it took only about 30 minutes lol Job well done!

Black paint would have been better. I still really like the car and want it to be clean, but its 6 years old with over 100k on it. I don't expect everything to be perfect because it has had a long life on the road and there are enough paint chips, etc. already on the car. There are some blemishes where the beige paint came off but I can live with that.

good attitude towards it as I've learned after owning different vehicles; it's impossible to have a perfect paint job.
