Our gas tanks are indeed 17.1 gallons. However, you probably will NEVER get to the point where you'll need to fill up the gas tank to the full capacity.
Case in point: the other day, I was driving when my fuel indicator light came on...then I proceeded to drive for another 20 miles, at least. I went to the gas station to fill my tank, and I ended up with a whole 14.88 gallons filled! That's with 3 clicks after the fuel automatically shut off. 17.1 (-) 14.9, equals 2.2 gallons left in the tank. This means, if I got 20 mpg (conservative estimate), I would technically have more than a 40 mile driving range left before I run out of fuel.
There have been several threads posted on this forum which have discussed this issue. It seems that the consensus is that the low fuel warning light comes on very prematurely.

Low Fuel comes on at 3 gallons- giving ample warning to fill up or suck up the crud on bottem of gas tank

Last week I decided to test just how long I could go after the fuel tank indicator went off... well I didn't want to get stuck on the highway, punked out and when I filled up 16.45gallons went in.... which means I got pretty close to 20 citi mph

It has been my experience that when the car says 0 miles to empty that I still had somewhere between 2 and 3 gallons remaining. I driven around for a day or two with the car still on 0 miles to empty and then when filled up it took 16 gallons. That is the most I have ever put in.

I've done this one two occasions just to see for myself how far I can go. The most I've gone is about 26 miles from the point 0 range appears. It's been awhile so I forget the exact fuel but I think it was close to or a hair above 16 gallons

It's 17 gallons but there is always some extra as the reserve which is why the light comes on earlier.
The other day, I was at range 1mile and had to go to school (15 miles away) and had no time to get gas because I had a test, got there and I wasn't being gentle on the way there. On the way back, I realized I forgot my wallet at home so I drove all the way home and then the gas station. So probably 15+15+2=32 miles and filled up a nice $50 at $3.05/Gallon(premium)

Many have commented that their TL failed to start on a hill when tank was low. It is presumed this is the reason for the early warning. The TL's tank seems to be sensitive to off balance starts with low fuel.
