oops..going from auto to triptronic while driving...
I was driving today and I normally like to keep my hand on the shifter but I did a fast turn and acidentally switched it from automatic into triptronic mode while going about 45mph. Does this mess up your transmission or engine?

Doesn't matter. Just puts you in Sport Shift mode in whatever gear you were already in.
Check the Owners Manual - it'll say you go back and forth between Sport Shift and Auto at your leisure.

get your red hot owner manuals here-
all the info on operation of the many systems on the TL, and how to drive it properly-
there are even max speeds for up and downshifting and rev limiters to learn about,,,dont even get me started on the climate controls or nav
All things you should learn how to use before driving the TL!!!!

I think the automatic is idiot/error proof. You can't downshift into a gear that would over-rev the engine, in sport mode, it automatically downshifts when you slow down so you won't lug the engine, you can't go into reverse while going forward, if you don't upshift while using sport mode and continue to accelerate, fuel cut off around redline, etc. MT you can probably do a lot more damage though. IE going from 5th to 2nd instead of 5th to 4th, depending on your speed.

pres- read the owner manual again- SS doesnt downshift so the engine doesnt lag!
it will go from whatever gear to 1st under 15mph if it thinks you are stopping.

it does put extra wear on 2nd 3rd gear clutches, which are the weak point of our transmission
Downshifting with purpose is fine- random downshift to slow down thru each gear is a waste of good clutchpacks!
Brakes SLOW the car, transmission is to be in the correct gear for max power off the corner, otherwise leave it alone and let the computer drive
