I also wonder why.

You have the capacity of the filter plus the column of oil above it that will drain out. About half a quart.

Thanks for the quick reply guys!

I only changed the oil but and the oil filter was stuck on good. I didn't have my filter wrench on me so I just left it on there. So now I have the wrench and wanted to know how much oil will come out.

correct you will just need to top off, I know you have a wrench now but if you have trouble taking off the filter you can do one of two things:

1) put a fat rubber band around the filter (this will give you more leverage when you are twisting the filter).

2) you can take a screw driver and punch a hole into the filter and twist I've done this in the past with used cars that I bought cause the filter was almost seized).

Good luck.

And next time smear new oil around the 0-ring and hand tighten it. An oil filter should never require tools to remove.

At this point, you can probably leave the filter on. If you read our service codes, it seems like you only have to replace the filter every other oil change. The only reason I'm throwing this out there is becasue it's probably going to be an absolute mess when you take that filter off...

I change it on every oil change, but it doesn't seem like it will be terrible to leave til the next one (unless you're using some kind of crappy filter like Fram on there...)

When removing your filter, loosen it enough to where you can finish removing it by hand. Then take a 1-gallon heavy duty ZipLock bag and put it on the filter, all the way up and over the pickup arm. Now remove the filter. The residual oil will go into the ZipLock bag and not all over you, your driveway or garage, and your suspension. Nice and neat.

This is what happens when people smear old oil instead of new oil on a new oil filter's gasket.
ALWAYS
use new oil on the gasket when installing an oil filter.
