just dont spill oil when you change the filter
the problem is that honda oil filters are at a slight angle... so when you unscrew them... the leak until completely off the thread.
the simple solution is to just use a rag and common sense... when your unscrewing the filter... let it drip on the rag not all over whatevers beneath it.
if you dont change your own oil... and u use a non-Honda dealer... like jiffy lube or whatever... make sure those monkeys know the problem and make sure THEY DONT spill.
don't hate Honda... don't forget that BMW X5's were spontaniously combusting WITHOUT SPILLED OIL not too long ago

I found another article that goes more in depth about the CR-V's catching on fire.

It's pretty disturbing for a new car under 5000 miles just going up in flames like that. I got about 3700 miles on my TL and my oil life is at 60%. I'm kinda afraid to go in for an oil change now.

the under side of your TL looks nothing like a CRV... the hot manifolds igniting the spilled oil is nowhere near the oil filter on your TL.
but either way... simply dont spill the oil. I'm sure Honda/Acura technicians will be much more careful in light of this egg all over their face...
If you change it yourself... just make sure you hold the filter with an absorbent towel.
If you go to Jiffy Club or whatever... good luck

oil changes
I'm hearing it was because the gasket from the old filter stayed on the engine block...the techs evidently didn't check this before putting on the new filter.

Another reason to do it yourself. I can't believe these guys have jobs. Truly the bottom of the food chain (some, not all - do not mean to offend anyone)

Now you can see how much higher we pay for the labor and what kind of poor quality service we get. Stupid tech :sqntfawk:
My car will go back to dealer next week again for A/C repair. hopefully, it will not be the same tech who put dents on my center console whihe fixing my A/C the first time.

I just saw this on national news about 15 minutes ago. They said it was because the tech improperly (meaning didn't tighten it correctly and the oil leaked) installed the filter. You would think they would know how to change an oil filter by now. Anyway, it is CRV's which have the manifold right behind the oil filter, and it looks like the CRV oil filter goes on horizontally (sideways) while our TL filter goes on vertically with the hole at the top, which reduces spillage when changing the filter.
