OEM windshields weak??
OEM windshields weak??
last 2 months ive had 2 rock chips on my windshield. do i have bad luck or are the TL windshields really weak? is there anything i can put on the windshield to help deflect flying rocks??
No they are not, in fact they are stronger than the inexpensive aftermarket, so it's just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Had a rock crack the windshield the second day I owned our 2008 knock around car, but the TL windshield is still the OE. Just stay away from the car/truck you're following, but sometimes that doesn't work as I've replaced windshields that have been cracked from cars going in the opposit direction.
My answer is "maybe". I have a half dozen, pin-head size chips that I'm keeping any eye on that I just got in Feb/March. To the best of my knowledge, I never followed a salt truck or even pass one head-on. The winter was pretty harsh here, so I'm sure there was more salt and cinders than in previous years. My guess on the source of the chips is from other cars kicking it up on the highway commute where the flow of traffic pushes 80 in the left lane. I definitely don't remember hearing any impact(s) on the windshield that would've made me think about it. While I don't doubt that OEM is a high quality windshield, my observation is that the outer layer isn't exceptionally chip-resistant.
The TL's windshield will chip like a normal windshield, however with the TL the way the windshield and body was designed it helps keep the TL rigid when the car flexs. This puts a bit more stress on the windshield than in a normal car. SO if you have a deeper chip, the glass will be weakened at that spot and spread into a crack. The best thing to do is get the chip filled in before it expands!
