Not sure to get the TypeS or TL Base
I was about to pull the trigger to get an 08 TLS, but looking at the problems and fixes section of the forum, it looks like the new S still have the unfixed suspension issue. I love everything in the car, but not willing to take a chance if I have to deal with such a problem in a brand new car. I wonder how many members here who owns the TYPES have to deal with this and let me know your thoughts. Thanks.
No problems with the susp here.
I do get some pinging with higher ambient temps, but that seems to be limited to 2007's only.
Get the Type-S. It's more fun and you've already got an ES350 for the "Luxo-Boat" ride.
If a base MT were available, that'd be an option, but .... .

if i had the money id get a brand new tl-s, but of course i dont and a used base tl was still more than enough for me. i love the thing. yes, the tl-s has the nice kit and +15 hp, and suspension and exhaust, but the base is still awesome
base or s, you can't beat it.

base or s, you can't beat it.

I also drove them both and decided on the Base TL with Navi. I personally didn't like the Type S rims. If you like the extras the Type S brings to the table, spend the cash and get them. If you aren't crazy over the extras, go with the Base TL with Navi and you won't be disappointed.
Performance or Ride Comfort is what you should be asking yourself apart from money.
I do not have a TYPE S eventhough my SN is contradictory. I have a 2006 Base TL. My SN was carried over from my 2nd Gen TYPE S days.

I will need to sleep on this for a few more days before making my decision. I have test drove the S twice and obviously I really love the way it looks and performs. But I am just concerned with the noisy rear suspension and the valve chatter "pinging" problems that Acura still haven't address.
Wha?

I chose the Base Tl for several reasons.
1 - Liked the blue lights over the red.
2 - Didnt really like the rims (not that I'm a fan of the base wheels).
3 - Dont like carbon fiber
4 - Liked the base rear lights better
5 - The seats looked horrible (this was before I saw the tan seats with the black carpet)
Performance was there but (at the time) the look was not. However, if i would have seen some of the Type-S pics on this forum before hand, I probably would have gone with the Type-S after all. Oh well, we'll see what the 09 has to offer.
Well, I had that dilemma too. But I ended choosing the Type-S. I love it!!! I also added on the body kit, it shows a little difference from the base.
In the beginning,,, I didn't like the red lighting on the interior, but since I got the Nighthawk Black Pearl,,, I started to like the black and red combo. I would say,,, "go for it"!!!

No suspension issues here, no valve chatter either. If you like the performance of the Type-S go for it. I found a few things that I wasn't crazy about (wheels for instance), but those can be changed out so I wouldn't base your opinion on anything cosmetic.
To help you with your decision, see if the dealer will let you take the car on an "extended road test" for a weekend or something. I know some dealers will let you and and some won't. Take it out for as long as you can and see what you think. If you're waiting for the perfect car with no problems you're going to be waiting a long time.

Just do it. You are agonizing WAY too much. EVERY car has "unresolved issues". Check out Club Lexus or the Infiniti/Nissan forums. Guess what they've got? "Unresolved Issues".
Not every TL-S has the "thump in the trunk" - mine doesn't and it's a fairly early 2007 VIN. From what I've read the pinging is ONLY 2007, not 2008.
And those are the only two TL-S specific issues of any significance that I know of.
Now go get that TL-S.
*Don't* make me come up there:

I didn't experience it on the few that I test-drove and don't have it on my car so I think the number of people who have it is not really that great in comparison to the total number of owners.
Mine had the suspension issue, but the dealer knew about it and it was quickly fixed.
I love the TL-S, if you like the soft ride of the ES then the TL-S is definitely not for you.
Personally I don't like the ES' handling.
But to answer your question TL-S.

You guys are way too persuasive.
I like the stiffer ride in the TypeS and the Lexus is a totally different machine because after I test drove the S, going home on the ES, I feel like I was driving a boat.
I am still debating to purchase or lease so I will probably make my decision by the end of the week.

Get the Type-S, I traded in my beautiful 04 TL for an 08 TL Type S... Love this car even more and no issues with the suspension yet ( hopefully ever...).
I did the buy with the 2.9% financing over 5yrs; free money with real interest-rates above that right now. If you don't mind higher payments, they offer even better rates when your term is less.

Good luck, hope you get a great deal and the color combo you want!!
Type-S FTW. With the way sales have been going, you can really get a deal on a Type-S. Think $34000+ Tax/Licensing and a pretty decent rate is what they're selling for these days. If you haven't noticed already, there are those subtle differences that make people love the Type-S(everything but the rims). I don't care for the extra power that much but the Type-S can get away perfectly without the Aspec lip kit on for it to look sweet. The little mods that base model owners have added all come standard on the Type-S like blacked out headlights, aggressive lip spoiler, aspec suspension.
Get the type-s, just the goodies alone are worth the extra cash. The red interior lighting is hot, i dont think i ever want a car without a back up camera ever again, and how about the fact that you will be different then all those other TL's you see, the quad tips are sweet, the handling is amazing, the seats are beautiful although they wear a little fast always get compliments on them, active noise canceling, more power i mean come on and you get all of this for a very small amount of money over the TL w/nav considering all you get.
The other thing too is from reading your posts it is obvious that you like the Type-S.
DUDE if you like the type-s there is no question get the type-s or you will regret it.
If you car starts to ping get a CAI and over 90% of the pinging will go away, and if you live in a cold climate I can almost garauntee that CAI with eliminate all pinging. I only get a very slight ping once and awhile and only when its above 80 humid , at 3500 rpm , under 50% throttle I can live with that.
Besides two rattles the dealership fix the only other problem now is my transmission and its getting fixed under warranty as we speak.

Third gear issue, they are replacing third gear and my clutch. But dont let this sway you. If you are going for a MT tell them you want to test drive it for awhile. You should be able to tell if the car has the 3rd gear issue withing 15 minutes of driving around the city because I had to actually adjust my shifting method specifically to account for third gear in my car because if I didnt i would grind third gear a lot.
I never test drove a MT Type-S before I bought only test drove AT's
