Non Dealer Extended Warranties

In this down economy with many people holding onto their cars longer, these companies seem to be springing up out of the woodwork. Everybody considering one just needs to be careful they aren't being scammed.

it's me, Alan Rickman.
DO NOT call any of those lame-o warranty things you see on TV. I called them because I was curious about it, they are worse than car and cell phone sales people.
By the end of the call he offered me 0% financing on the extended warranty, plus the military discount, plus the student discount, plus the exclusive friends and family discount.
wtf??
The things the warranty covers are not likely to break - like my engine. I'm more concerned about the electronics on the car vs. having a severe engine problem.
(anyways the warranty was like $2k or something, 2x more than I paid for my Acura Care warranty)

Keep Right Except to Pass
Last December my dealer offered me a 5-year, 60K extended warranty on my 2004 TL; the carrier is CostGuard. The factory warranty had expired. I pondered it for a while and ultimately purchased the extended one due to all the electronics on the car (and, based on some of the posts on the Audio/Navi subforum, I think caution was probably in order). So far I've had three things fixed under the extended warranty: Power steering pump was failing and making an annoying noise in the morning; low horn driver blew out a month later (the second time I've had that happen); then in April one of the drive belt tensioners started making a whining noise and needed replacement. So far no problem at all getting any of these paid directly to the dealer under the extended warranty and I had no out-of-pocket (that is, I didn't have to pay for the repair and then file a reimbursement claim).
I probably wouldn't have opted for it if it were for a shorter term.

I bought an extended warranty from Carchex in May. 4 years and up to 125k miles. Cost was about 1850. My 06 had 55k on it at the time. Haven't needed it, but it is a reputable company with a good BBB rating.

Extended warranties, unless offered by the dealer, is a VERY VERY shady business.
As some have said, many go out of business, default, file for bankruptcy, etc. Others get their claims paid for a while, but there is ABSOLUTELY NO extended warranty company that has been in business for a long time, under same ownership, etc.
I did a lot of research on this before getting my CPO (with extended warranty) 07 TL-S from a dealer.
Since you have an 04 with only 49k miles, you're better off saving your money. The problems you will most likely incurr in the next 2-3 years/36k miles will not warrant the cost the "other" companies will charge you for, and that's only IF the company is around and willing to take care of it.
I'm actually surprised that a few people here have had positive experiences with other-than-dealer companies. The # of people with negative experiences is outrageous lately.

I'd make sure the warranty is Honda and not aftermarket. I know someone with a BMW who bought an extended warranty from the dealer at the time of purchase. When they needed work done, they found out that the warranty was not BMW's and the company that had underwritten it had gone out of business. They were saddled with a $3500 bill. At least get in writing from the dealer that they will cover the repairs if you have a problem.

hey guys i ve been looking up on the US FEDELIS warranty.. i was thinking of getting it for my car 04 106k, so i can get the TB, water pump, etc done... they were gonna charge 130 to open and 97 a month for 24 months...they offered a 5 yr warranty for it.. the nly thing is i have to wait 2 months after opening.. so i figured 130 to open and a months payment = around 2250 and i can get it done... what do u think??
