No MP3 capability for '04 TL :(

I read in an article, one of the VTEC ones I believe that there will not be any MP3 playback capability offered for the '04 TL like there is on the '03 Honda Accord (as an option). That sucks, I was hoping they'd offer that capability ... I wouldn't want to lose the DVD-Audio functionality, but at the same time I would want MP3 playback ... Acura said something to the effect that they needed to draw the line somewhere for audio quality in a luxury automobile ... I think thats BS since well encoded MP3s sound as good as CDs to the average person. I doubt that most people buying the '04 TL are gonna be true audiophiles and can tell the difference between MP3 and CD quality... especially in a car.

Oh well, just wishing

Yeah...kind of a bummer...but damn...you do have XM which is nice...I've had it for about a year and a half and love it. Heck with an indash 6 disc make up some Mix cd's and you'll be set.

I wanted MP3 Playback too..

Like the NEW Audi Navi System, that has MP3 Player built into the Player and Shows ID3 Tags..

The One on the Accord is the stupidest Player specially for the $500 Price tag that comes with it.. The accord Player only shows numbers and not ID3 Tag, Its so stupid.. SO if you have 150 Songs, u have to memorize all the track numbers and song names...

But I did think the Acura TL would have this stupid player as a option, but it doesn't and I am not that dissappointed, because with that $500 I can buy a receiver and antenna and a dvd player and watch local channels and DVD's on the navigation and on top of that I can use the DVD Player to Play MP3 Files and show ID3 tags on the Navi Screen, Pretty Clever huh?

With the eight inch navi screen, listing mp3 titles would have been perfect for this car. They should have implemented this instead of DVD Audio, which is still in its infancy and may or may not survive competition from SACD.

Yeah, I read where they were "drawing the line" in audio quality by not installing mp3 capability. I would challenge anyone to do a blind test between a CD and an mp3 encoded at 320kbs. Official studies have been conducted with audiophile experts and they can't even tell the difference. Just another example of where Acura missed the mark in designing this car.

Also Acura might be trying to push people to use XM Radio and they probably make commission from the $10/Month so they know if people have MP3 CD Player, that they will never pay for XM Radio, WHO WOULD!

Why doesn't Acura drop the cassett tape player and put in MP3? Not many people use cassetts. At least I don't.

I wonder if Sirius will be an option! That would be cool cause they have 60 streams with no commercials. Would the same antenna be compatible to use Sirius?

Sirius would require a whole new receiver and it would not integrate like XM does because Acura Engineers have programmed the Navi to support XM, so it shows the channel names on the navigation and etc..

Getting Sirius would be a lot of hard work and on top of that it would look stupid to have a Sirius receiver at the bottom of your dash, while your car comes standard with XM Radio..

If you like Sirius that much than I would pick a Different CAR

But whatever floats your boat..

I think DVD-A with 5.1 is much much much nicer than low quality mp3 crap. But, it should be more than possible to get a MP3 cd changer for the trunk. So ya'll can have the best of both worlds (quality & quantity).

I would LOVE to see MP3 capability.. 1 cd - 20 albums..
Yes, @192-320kbps I cant hear the difference between CD or this.. Definitely much better than cassette quality.. Cassette should be DROPPED and mp3 put in.. They really dont have to do much to add mp3 capability.. The laser in CD/DVD players are strong enough, they just need to implement a simple mp3 decoding chip into the HU....
Hope they'll add it eventually..
Something else to look into. Alpine has 6 CD/mp3 changer.. Maybe it's compatible, but I doubt it - and mostly likely no ID3 tags unless u have compatible Alpine HU..
Bluetooth Ipod would be nice.. But Bluetooth adds like $100+ to the cost of the player probably...
BTW, what phones offer bluetooth that are compatible with TL. Sorry for going off topic here..

Talking

I'll second for XM. Other than the occasional CD, I've listened to nothing else for over a year now. Should sound much better going directly into the head instead of the FM mod setup I have currently. Can't wait to hear DVD-A. There are some good iPod cradles/modulators - piss poor substitute for an integrated MP3 solution, but it'll work...........

I have a SONY 10 Disk Changer /W MP3 in my 2000 TL....I have the display unit velcro'd beneath the am/fm/cd buttons. This is the BEST thing I have bought. I absolutely love it...it displays the ID3 tags and all. Plus it has an awesome blue backlight that looks Great at night.

I am VERY VERY Dissappointed that ACURA has given such a BS excuse for not putting it in. I guess I'll be transferring my MP3 changer to the new one next year.

Question

Now you got me confused. When I download a bunch of MP3, and then burn them on a CD, I get 20-25 songs on one CD, not 20 albums.

Does the burning process convert the MP3s into something else? Clearly that 'something else' is in that case less compressed, but the key question is: can I maybe play these CDs in a TL?

-----

(Added later I just checked, and most songs are 4-5 MB when in MP3 format. So, I should be able to get some 150 of them on a 700MB CD as MP3s. Can someone explain to me what the burning process does? And again, if CDs like that are fine in a TL.

Thanks, RJ

When you get 20-25 songs you aren't burning mp3's, think of mp3's like a .zip file for .wav. You're burning the .wav file inside the mp3 onto your CD and then you can play it on (most) any CD player.

When you burn an 'mp3 cd' you are putting the mp3 file onto the CD, so a regular CD player will not play it. It is a 'data' CD, not an audio CD. mp3 CD players have the software in them to 'unzip' the mp3 and play it.

I work for an Acura dealership in Austin TX. The XM rep was in a couple days ago and told us about it. Since Acura own stock in XM you wont be seeing any Sirrius products offered. I sell accessories for our dealership also and the same type of MP3 player "add on" thats offered in the TSX is being worked out for the TL. The thing will probably be close to $600 installed. I wont know anything for sure until Sept 16 (when we go to the ride and drive in Houston).

I guess we are just have to make CD-R's from illegal mp3's. I already get the MP3's for free, I think the least I could do is give up a few cents for the CD-R and 10 minutes fo my time.

Is the MP3 player in the TSX a single disc or changer...b/c an MP3 Changer would be off the hook.

Relief! So, this means that my CDs burned from MP3 will work fine in the TL. I was totally confused.

If you look at the company where people are getting TV converters for the TSX, they also offer a 10 disc changer taht hooks up to nav and plays MP3s as well as DVDs if I read it correctly, was a little while ago

Yes that is what I plan to do..

Well what it does is, takes the RGB Signal and converts to VGA(?) or some signal for TV/DVD etc...

So to convert you have to buy a $500 box, and the box has UHF, and RCA INPUTS...

So you can hook up antenna and watch local channels or you can hook up a DVD Player, and if you buy a DVD Player that plays MP3 and Shows ID3 Tags (MOST DO) than u can see the ID3 Tag on the screen..

I was already gonna do the mod so I thought it would be cool, but I have to open the DVD Player everytime I wanna change MP3 CD's, but I wont be doing that much so that wasn't a problem, the problem is using a remote to change songs and stuff.. Why cant they just have it built into the 2004TL so its all integrated, also if its integrated I can still use the navi and etc.. if u do this mod, u have to keep the Navi Off, so its useless and you Need the navi to change A/C and other things.. so I guess its a BIG Disadvantage!

also like the Bluetooth and DVD-A and all the good stuff would be useless if u turned NAVI Off, because if u make the DVD Player use the speakers in the car, than Bluetooth phone call and all the other stuff can't go thru the speakers, and all the voice activated technology would be useless.. Man PROBLEMS!

cool news, but $600 for mp3 cabability without ID3 tags is no go for me.. I'd rather go the 10 cd changer way as posted above, or Alpine 6 cd/mp3 changer..
Would LOVE to see mp3 ID3 tags on that 8 inch screen though..

I was crying over why the new TL does not have MP3 CD Player, but if the TL can play normal MP3's converted to CD format than put on a DVD, thats like MP3 CD only with greater quality sound, maybe when Acura said they didn't put MP3 CD because there is too much technology, they were right

So if the DVD-A Player can play Normal DVD CD's than you can get about 5 Audio CD's in one, better than MP3 CD and MORE QUALITY!

Quick Reply: No MP3 capability for '04 TL :(
