It's the HUGE C-pillars. That's the design feature which causes poor visibility.

I've never found the visibility to be poor. I'm sure part of that is that my other car is a convertible and thus has enormous blind spots when the top is up, so most cars seem not to be problematic by comparison.

I know this thread is old, but I do have a couple cents to input. I too a long time ago watched the news, where "Olson on your side" [for you canadians] showed us the method. What I did, and he recommended over the OP's idea, is have the mirror show only a sliver of your car's body. This eliminates the disorienting while giving the added visibility needed. As for further elimination of blind spots, I am going to be removing the rear head rests as I believe they are completely useless and just get in the way.
