New rear bumper – color difference ?
I got rear-ended last week while at a red light, nothing major but they did have to change the rear bumper. Now that I look at it, you can tell a difference in the paint color if you look from the side of the car. Is this normal, what do you guys think? Is this a bad paint job? It was done at the body shop of an Acura dealership.
thanks.

^ What? Are you joking?
#5
^^ he is not joking... on most cars, bumpers are off a shade or two....
My WDP also has darker front and rear bumper.
But in the pic, there is huge difference...maybe is the lighting or photo you took?

old vs. new
I know that silver is hard to match and that the color will look a bit different because of plastic/fiberglass vs. metal... but this is what my car used to look like, it matched a lot better then!

I know that pictures can be tricky with the lighting and all, but the way the picture can out is exactly the difference that you see if you were looking at it directly....

^ Unless that is a lighting/photo issue, I would not tolerate that.
If properly prepped, and primer/sealer matches, I don't see why you will be seeing a big difference in color shades. Although I do understand that a silver metallic can be hard to match, but if that pic is true, they shouldn't be that far off....

i have the asm and my rear bumper looks like that. in direct sunlight it looks like it matches perfect but in less light conditions its looks like a totally diff color. the guy i work with says i have a two tone paint job. i have the rear aspec lip and it matches the rest of the car better than my back bumper?

I just spoke with the bodyshop manager at the Acura dealership. He says that its normal, especially for a silver TL. Because its silver, the way it looks depends on the angle of the light hiting it, and because of the way the rear bumper of the tL meets the back quarter panel (it goes down vertically where it meets) you can see it more than on another car.
He's right when he mentioned that if you look at it from the back, the trunk and the bumper look the same color... its only when you look at it from the sides that you can see a difference.
Ill try and post other pictures tonight, including one taken from the back and another side shot to give you guys a better picture. But trust me, the way it looks on the picture is the same way it looks looking at it direclty, the bumper is definitely darker than the quarter panel...
Should I just let it be and move on???

If its that bad in person, that is an unacceptable match imo. That's more than just a few shades off in that pic. I use to paint for an Acura dealer and that definitely would not fly. Show the manager the before pic's and nicely let him know that the color match is not acceptable and your not satisfied. It will not be perfect, but should be close to the QP than that.
I've matched different materials, rigid/flexible plastic, metal, fiberglass without any problems. It's more about how the adjacent panels line up, and butt up at different angles and levels, regarding metallics and full panel color matching.

well, remember acura dealerships don't actually DO the body work themselves, but in fact DRIVE IT to a "local" body shop and have them do it...
honestly, your first mistake was taking it to the dealership...now you have to deal with the dealership that of course then has to deal with the body shop...
GOOD LUCK MAN!!! BUT don't settle for the bs they give you...
YES it looks a bit off; seems darker than original...they should of caught that...THERE bad..

They actually have their own bodyshop which is located at the dealership, they do the work right there (you can see the bodyshop floor...) The dealership owners also own a BMW and benz dealerships so they also work on those cars as well (@ the Acura dealership)
I should have more pictures posted by 6-7pm ET tonite...

Yeah that's not always the case, varies by location. Some dealers have their own in house body shop, a majority use a direct repair facility, some will just refer you to their preferred or recommended body shop.

IMO, it looks like they painted it the wrong direction. I remember when I painted my old prelude super marine blue (very high flake count), I painted the hood a different direction then the rest of the fenders etc. Just by spraying the paint the wrong direction, it kinda gave the shade difference effect you see on your bumper.
Could also explain why when you look at it from different angles it's not THAT bad.
IMO, I agree with everyone else. If that's how it looks in person, take it back. Don't let him shovel you his bs.

wow... it all depends on the lighting conditions.
from the back, it matches the trunk just fine.
under a flash, it looks horrible! almost seems like they painted my car grey!

yeah... it all depends on the angle. Looks really good from the back, but not that great from a back/side view... I'm still debating what to do. That picture from the garage with the flash looks awful... although its not that bad in person, that picture just seems like a completely different paint color...

Mine is a 2004. Are you sure that the paint color is different between 04/05 and 06+??? If thats the case, I think you might be right on. Because the new paint just looks too dark if you look at it from the side. Maybe they painted the wrong color, ASM instead of SSM?
I hope someone can confirm the SSM and ASM difference because I thought that all 04 to 08 silver TL's were the same.

ok thanks. So in your opinion, especially since you and your buddy have an SSM and an ASM and youve seen them side by side, does my rear bumper look like ASM?
thanks for your input, I would have never thought of that since I thought all silver TL's were the same. So far, yours seems like the most logical explanation. And if that's the case, they need to repaint my rear bumper.

yepp..lol..at one point my friend was stock like me..lol and we have the same % tint..so no one could tell whos cars was whos..lol...
in my opinion it like like asm...but hey..it cud just be the pics. u should ask whoever painted your bumper what paint code they used..and see if it matches the sssm one. if not..it was painted asm.
and as other have stated the color difference in the bumpers..mine is a perfect match

I went into dealer for touchup paint, being sarcastic,,,I asked for one for car & one for bumper. They laughed & explain to me that it's the SAME paint. The SAME paint will look different on metal & plastic. Also if you notice if you ever chip the paint off your bumper, the base plastic is "BLACK"....I believe this will make the paint to have a darker shade too. I highly doubt they prime the car black to match the bumper before painting.

I completely understand what youre saying... but if you look at my before picture, it did not look like that at all... it is very noticable now.
