New to me 2007 TL Type S

After years of wanting one, I was finally able to get one! My cousin sold me his since he is moving and I was happy to take it off his hands. It’s a 6 speed with an HFP Short Ram, xlr8 exhaust, and Hondata (Not sure if it’s running a map or not)

It has not been driven much in his ownership and currently sits at 164k. I knew it needed some work when I got and so it’s getting caught up on some maintenance.

As of yesterday, it’s got a new timing belt/water pump kit, serpentine belt, cabin filter, and valve cover gaskets. I had my friend do a valve adjustment while he had the covers off. They weren’t too off, but they definitely needed to be adjusted.

Next weekend, we’re doing upper control arms, putting on coilovers, drain an fill of trans fluid (GM Synchromesh) and swapping some exhaust stuff from my accord. (RV6 PCDs and ATLP J-pipe) I have a new radiator too but we left it out so we can easily access the front cat when we start next weekend.

Excited to get it on the road in a couple weeks!

Brought it to a friends house to do some work….he did most of it since he’s actually a tech.

Engine is very clean. No sludge at all in either bank.

Timing belt looked like it had been done before, but water pump was leaking so it all got replaced.

My current car. 07 Accord 6-6 Sedan. I’ve loved it but I’m happy to replace it with the TL.

Too nice bro. I also retired my 06 Accord for a 07 TL-S recently.

You have some of the best goodies on that TL. Congratulations on the upgrade!!!

It’s not bad! It was a daily so it’s got little nicks and a dings. Nothing crazy. Seats are all in tact and it’s got one crack in the dash. The headlights ARE clear surprisingly. Not sure how he kept them that clean. Just needs some love.

yeah dings and chips are to be expected, I have many as well sadly. But my Aunt / Uncle had an 07 TL-S and that poor thing was always outdoors. A silver car just like mine and it was a sad sight. Clear coat was glazed, headlamp yellow and opaque… honestly, it was hard to even reconcile in my head that we had the ‘same’ car.
… what I’m trying to say is that yours looks very good. Enjoy it!

Its crazy man. I like these cars so much and I’ve seen so many beat up ones. Like people that just don’t care about it at all. Makes me sad

Ok I wasn’t very fair to them, if they had room to park it under shade they would have. They are big Honda fans, they have a 1998 Integra TypeR parked under an awning on the back porch, lol. So if there was something that could have been done they would have. My point was just to say that these car, sitting out in the elements will look weathered over time.

Oh that’s pretty cool! Yeah I mean I care about my accord a lot, but I’ve never been able to garage it. So the paints fading pretty bad. I was actually looking into repainting but then this car came along.

So my friend got pretty far. I was able to stick with him to get the Jpipe and cats off of the TL and then I had to leave. We got stuck on one rusty bolt that we ended up needing a stripped socket set to get out. After I left, he completed swapping the parts. Did not anticipate having to undo the axle to get the rear cats in and out but obviously that added a lot of time since he had to do it to both cars. He also completed putting the new control arms in and putting the front coilovers in. All that’s left are the rear coilovers, refilling with fluids, drain and fill of the transmission, and we are done. That will happen Wednesday night.

Had to break out the torch.

It’s finally almost done. Alignment tomorrow! Rear coilovers went in with no issues. Even saved the rear sway bar endlinks. Had new ones on hand just in case. Needs an AC compressor next but as far as drivability goes, it feels great and there’s no weird noises. Also, it’s been so long since I drove it so I can’t remember exactly how it sounded, but the PCDs and Jpipe give this thing life. I love the way it sounds. I do remember the shifting feeling very notchy. Seems the GM fluid did the same thing as it did for my Accord. Felt like butter through the gears.

Rear coilovers

Needed some gas for the test drive.

A finally put together engine bay. Just needs some of the plastic put on.

No need to remove the Axle to replace the rear cat or rear engine mount. Just gingerly bring it in from the top.

I don't know man. The PCD's would fit without removing it, but the heatshield on the OEM's were just too big. There was no way it was going to come out. We tried haha. We thought about removing a motor mount and pushing the motor closer the front to make room.

You have to first take the x 4 10mm bolts that hold the heatshield after ungolting the cat from the block and J-pipe, then remove both parts fo the heatshield. Slides right out afterwards.

Been driving it all week and getting to enjoy it! Cleaned the inside and outside. I need to even out the height and get it aligned still but that’s coming soon. I’m not going to lie. It kind of looked like this before I washed it too. Silver cars are too easy. All my previous cars have been black and are dirty in the first 5 minutes after a wash.

So, I kept getting locked out of my gears intermittently. Needed to feather the throttle and pump the clutch to get it into gear sometimes. Normally after a hard pull.

The clutch in it supposedly didn’t have too many miles on it but I have no idea what kind of
clutch was put in. After replacing the master and slave cylinder, the throw out bearing was squeaking during the bleed process. So, while it’s in the shop just going to get the clutch done. LUK clutch kit and LUK flywheel. Looking forward to having smooth shifting gears.

@Ltfa182 Do not use the LUK throw out bearing. It is trash. Get an OEM throw out bearing.

That gear lock out / hard pedal is very common on high mileage TLs. Still drives perfectly fine as long as you double clutch

I was reading about that…seems to be hit or miss. Some people say it made noise for the first couple days then went away. I bought a backup throw out bearing just in case.

No matter how how many times I pumped the clutch it wouldn’t come back. If I blipped the throttle high enough then it would go in. Knowing the clutch has been replaced makes me think It’s either a poor quality clutch or it was installed wrong. I’m about to find out!

I believe that can also be caused by a bad flywheel

Good thing I bought a flywheel too! Honestly, if the trans has to come out I figured I’d just buy everything I need. Got a rear main seal kit and I am prepared to to replace anything else I need to since the subframe has to come out. Don’t want to pay labor twice.

Make sure you buy all the random bits, spare clips, etc. Nothing worse than starting on the job only to realize during reassembly that you are now missing important bolts/gasket/clips/replacement parts for worn items. Worst for me was new nuts/bolts for suspension; had to drive to honda and pay out the butt for them.

It's getting done at a shop so they will be taking care of that part for me. I'm sure I'll be paying for some additional hardware.

Hope you get behind the wheel soon. My wife had a first with our TL a couple of weeks ago. Clutch pedal went to the floor and stayed there, so car wouldn’t move. She got out pulled the pedal back out, then it continued to operate normally…

So…this has been kind of an adventure. The clutch is in but the system still needs to be fully bled. I know I mentioned this prior but I had the master and slave cylinders replaced prior to deciding to do the clutch and this has been the cause of a huge headache and delay.

Ordered the Luk CMC from rockauto and it was leaking fluid through the seals during the bleed process. Had to order that locally and send that back. Also, ordered the Luk slave cylinder from rockauto. Today, the clutch got put in and started the bleeding process. Now the slave was defective! I’ve ordered a lot from rockauto for years and have never had that happen before. But this has made me reconsider buying certain parts from them. Mainly things that might be affected by sitting on the shelf too long. So now I have a Napa CMC and an O’Reillys Slave cylinder (the only one I could find locally today)

My friend said he spent alot of time bleeding it and got it to a point where the clutch pedal seems to engaging and it goes into all gears, but he said there is definitely still air in the lines. Not sure whats going on here, but seems like we’re closer now.

If I have to do this again, OEM all the way. The OEM SC is actually cheaper then what I paid for the OR one. Just needed one same day.

It’s back. Now shifting feels amazing and the clutch pedal is so much lighter compared to the stage 2 clutch that was in there.

Top was the “stage 2” clutch that was in there. There was no friction material left. Those rivets caused hot spots and grooves into the flywheel so it’s a good thing I bought that too! This clutch was beyond done.

I always recommended new fly wheel goes along with clutch replacement, it make that new clutch pedal experience that much better.
