New-ish Interior LED Idea...(should have probably gone to bed)

Since it's getting cold and God forbid I actually leave my car alone for once, I was wondering if there's such a thing as 'too' bright on interior LED lighting? I am kicking around the idea of making up some custom circuit boards that would be custom fit to the TL and using some INSANELY powerful LED for PnP fun.

I COULD just buy them pre-made, but what fun is that?

Just wondering what everyone's thoughts on the matter is, I likes to play with LEDs during the winter! Any different/custom boards that'd be a nice touch to the TL?

I have this 24-LED board that I stuck w/ double stick tape over the trunk light housing and routed the wire to connect to the socket inside. been on it for about 2.5 years iirc. its hella bright:

Nichia Raijin's would be a good choice. It's the brightest 4 pin LED out there and doesn't require a CC driver.

Yeahhhhh, I’ve looked at them a few times. I would LOVE to play around with them, but the price point and availability don’t make them the most appealing LEDs from a price-point perspective…but maybe…

Since I'm practically starting from scratch regarding interior LEDs, I'm really interested in what you have in mind. I like bright white LEDs.

I have a 48 LED board....
In all 4 domes...

Check out Roger555, he has Luxeon LEDs or some other high powered LEDs with a dimmer switch installed.

My friends call me "The Mobile Tanning Salon"

One of my LED boards is bright enough to light up the entire interior.

that's almost as bright as mine. I have the 24's in all 4 domes, with them all on, this is how much light spills out:

DeathMetal - Im curious as to what you come up with.

They are quite expensive and a little tough to get.

If you don't mind using an LED in an SMD package, the selection goes way up. Plus a lot of them are as bright or brighter than the Nichia's at a similar drive current and are have a lower profile (1.25 - 2.0 mm)

I'm going to redo my interior lighting with home made PCB's and SMD emitters. I've seen some of your DIY and projects and am sure you can pull this off with or without prior experience.
EDIT: These are the ones I ordered.

Oh, we're going to have a little bit more fun with it - I'll be custom etching the boards to take full well advantage of the surface area we have available and maybe trying to work it so the dimension of the board has kind of a pnp snap and fit to it.

Thanks for the suggestion on the LEDs, there's a different one I am going to be trying for this...methinks I'll order materials tonight/tomorrow and start on the trunk!

Be careful if you live near an airport...your interior might cause some navigational confusion.

Can't wait to see whatever you do.

I was thinking about this, since I can "shape" the boards, I'm going to play around with it...

I'm going to be attempting 3 thing:

(1) Stupid bright
(2) Optimize available space
(3) Cost efficient and reproduceable

These ought to turn out really nice. If you haven't already found empty bulb bases for DIY PnP applications, Autolumination sells them for really cheap.

They're usually found at the bottom of the page.

V-LED's also sells a few different versions with headers already connected, but I don't like the way they fit the OEM bulb socket.

Sorry, fellas...but there's greener pastures in the 2nd gen arena, no pun intended. I'll be working on full-scale LED tails for the 2nd genners.

only advice i can give is be cautious with the colour you picke. I just installed blue led (12 each board or whatever you guys call it lol – sorry)

on my WDP with beige interior. 15% of me says I should have went white because of how it goes with the beige but the blue still looks f’n amazing!

Blue led would be better for black interior

^not really.

blue in the dome lights is pure "wow factor"

nothing beats the white LEDs for either black or beige
