New 3G owner from Canada

Hey there,

Last summer I was lucky enough to pick up a diamond White 07 TL Type-S 6 speed. Before this, I'd owned a few EP3 Civics - SiR in Canada, Si in the U.S. - and a great deal of BMWs. So far I love the TL, with a few things I'm still trying to figure out.

When I bought the car it was lowered on function form coilovers, had 25mm spacers all around, and had a custom exhaust where everything factory had been deleted and replaced with a single aftermarket resonator. Now I know some of you probably run or like these types of mods, and that's totally cool, I just like OEM stuff.

Here's the car on the coils/spacers when I first bought it.

I replaced the stock suspension with some manual base TL springs and shocks. Not ideal, but it is a bit of a temporary solution to make the car more comfortable for daily driving. I think I might upgrade to Tien H-techs and Konis in the future. At the same time I replaced the rather camber worn (and old) tires with a new set of Conti DWS'.

After that, I went to fix the next thing on the car - the exhaust. The exhaust the came car with was very droney, and after having a good look at it on the hoist at work I decided it had to go. Luckily, I was able to find someone locally here in BC with a great condition OEM Type-S exhaust. The fellow said the system came off a supercharged 6-speed that had since gone to a full 3" system.

Here's the system the car came with:

And the nice replacement:

I've done some other regular maintenance not worthy of pictures. New plugs, new evap purge valve, new hybrid racing shifter bushings, Redline MTL for the trans, and a power steering pump rebuild via a gates kit. I replaced the shift knob with a SuperKlasse weighted knob - this is a knob based on the 90s Toyota MR2 shift knob.

Here's the car currently:

Very recently while I was on the highway doing some spirited driving, I had the clutch on the car slip. When I bought the car I was aware the rear main was weeping, and that at the mileage it was likely to need a clutch at some point. So after some deliberation I bit the bullet and bought an XLR8 daily flywheel and clutch kit from Heeltoe. I greatly prefer single mass flywheels (and lighter flywheels), so I'm happy to ditch the factory dual mass setup.

I'll probably create another thread to discuss some of the things I want to sort out with the car - mostly driving/shifting dynamics. Thanks for reading.

Cheers,
Dan

congrats! look into gm friction modified mtf as that's the magic stuff for our cars. it's seriously awesome.

also look into doing a CT short shifter if you want some crisp feeling in the stock shifter setup and remove the check valve in the slave cylinder. i've heard good things about the xlr8 daily system and that's what i would like to put in but may just do the oem luk setup again whenver that time comes. i've had my 6mt type s for almost 12 years now so feel free to ask any questions!

keep us updated on the new xlr8 feel!

Thanks for the suggestions.

I quite like the redline MTL I put in the car so far, it improved shifting and fixed a few weird idiosyncrasies. Will see how well it holds up, perhaps I'll try the GM stuff another time.

It's funny you mention the slave cylinder check valve delete - I actually already have an EM2 spec Exedy master cylinder ready to go in the car, and a Luk brand slave cylinder that I intend to remove the check valve from on order. Delay valves were also a thing in many of the BMWs I've owned and they are truly awful.

Do you have the CT short shifter in your car? If it's a nice upgrade I'll consider it, but at the same time I'm also tempted to just go all out and get the K tuned billet shifter assembly. I think ideally I'd want something fairly mild, not too short if you catch my drift.

yea i have the CT SS in my car and i love it. i have it paired with a raceseng slammer and my whole setup feels absolutely amazing. mine has always been a daily driver and it's not too crazy. i think the CT SS is $70 compared to 200-400 for the k tuned assembly

Recieved my Luk clutch slave cylinder on Thursday, and modified it Friday. Going to install it, an EM2 spec clutch master cylinder, and a new fastline SS line today. Review to come.

I had an automatic nbp type s before that was written off. I got to keep all the parts from it and ended up finding the wdp 6spd for cheap so going to start transferring parts soon. One thing that does need work tho is the body, little bit of typical rust on the rear quarter panels. Once body Is fixed and parts are on I'll get to further modding like you are rn and really get to enjoy my first 6spd
