New 04 TL but there something wrong with MPG.

Whats up peeps i wanted to see if you guys can help i got my TL last week and notice ive fill up three times ( but ive been driving everywhere ) is there a way i can get better MPG. I know the last guy told me he changed the spark plugs but i think he got the hungry ones . I remember on my last car when i changed the spark plugs with i guess you can say an upgraded ones(hungry) i was filling her up twice as much. SO i wanted to know if you guys can tell me which spark plugs i should get since i fell like buying new ones and hopefully that will help because ive been reading and i know i dont get more then 20.

What kind of driver are you? The harder you are on the pedal and the more stop & go you do, the more gas you'll use. You might also want to check your air filter and tire pressures.

As for the plugs, you should ONLY be using the OEMs, NGK Iridiums, part# 6994 . They come pre-gapped and get tightened to 13 ft-lbs.

Get the OEM NGK plugs, ONLY.

You should be getting 275 miles on a full tank before the gas light comes on. This equals ~ 21mpg.

I was averaging 26 when I had mine and usually filled up at around 320 miles. That's for a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving and I didn't drive the car gently at all.

You can use any non gimmick plug you want. Iridiums are only used for extended change intervals. If you're not planning on pushing it to the rediculous 105,000 mile change interval, there are many cheaper plugs that will work just as well. I'm running platinums now and have been for 40,000 miles. I'm getting ready to change to regular copper plugs. At 40,000 mile intervals I have no need for the iridium.

Back on topic, unless the plugs are fouled, your mpg issue is not related. If the plugs were bad enough to cause a significant drop in mpg, you would also be getting misfire codes.

You don't mention what your actual mpg is. The TL will range all over the map. 33mpg is normal on the freeway yet 14mpg is normal is heavy stop and go where your average speed is less than 20mph.

I started a thread on this a long time ago, try a search. It showed that mpg was directly related to average mph. So I guess the real questions are what is your mpg and average mph? If it's the 20 you mentioned, there's probably nothing wrong with the car unless it's 100% freeway miles.

keep the rpm out of vtec range- it runs like a V8 in gas use then!

ngk iridium is the stock plug and found to work best in the TL
ngk platinum was used on gen2 - very small price differance
the MAIN concern being NGK or Denso plugs only
no fancy trick plugs or 2 dollar cheapies
Spend the money- do it once and be done with it,,not everyone likes to repeat this job

air filter- tire pressure- cabin filter- ck all the normal things, once the first month excitement wears off,, the mileage usually goes up..dont have to rabbit everywhere~

+1 on tire pressure. I drive my '04 like I stole it in a mix of city and highway and I have never got below 25mpg. I do have the 6MT though

Awesome fellas. I guess then im not use to the v6 and v8 vtec monster. I use to have a 4cyc. it say average MPG 20.Since i got her ive been trying to keep the rpms under 3k but i get the urge to step on it here and there. but it might have to do with the tires cause my boy told me yesterday to put some more air on my front tire hopefully this works. Thanks for all your help. Off topic do you know a good website for the price to get my V2 they told me that could help with the MPG when i change it.

It's really not the V6 that hurts the mileage. It's the 3,500lbs it has to pull around.

an intake wont help your situation!!
do the K&N filter+ remove intake resonator box for unrestricted airflow

learm what tire pressure you are at and what you should be running
Your buddy may not have them at 36 for you
BUY a tire guage and ck them monthly

what tires are on it? sticky tires get less mileage but twice the fun factor

AIR FILTERS MAKE ABSOLUTELY NO MPG DIFFERENCE ON AN ELECTRONICALLY FUEL INJECTED CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know how many times this needs to be said around here.

I prefer them to replacing paper every year, a little earth friendly gesture for my extra carbon footprint via backroad throttle use and track days

The increased airflow with res box out lets the engine pull as much air as it wants.
The head tech at local acura told me to do it on the gen2
