Need some friendly-racing tips
A friend of mine (08 Civic SI 6SP + mods: injen intake + exhaust) asked me (08 Base TL 5SP + mods: tint ) for a short race. Now, I've only owned this TL for 3 months and never really had any "race" experience before.
If we were to roll at about 30-40mph, would I get faster jump by using the Sport Shifters downshift to 2nd and start from there, or just leave it in D and hit it to the ground.
Again, please take into consideration the civis is modded and mine is not, and I've never raced before, but I'm a decent driver tho
What's my chance ?

Its funny how so many are installing all these performance parts yet everybody is so against racing... Well i am too but sometimes where it is kinda safe you take the risk i guess. Im 100 % that maybe 1 % of all of us on here go to the track, even if that many

start from a ~30MPH roll, and i would say just leave it in D because sport shift lags a sec or 2 since it has to go through a bunch of sensors making sure you dont blow your engine.

If you are going from a roll then you want to use sport shift. If you leave it in D then you will have a delay with the downshift which will result in a loss against the SI. 30MPH is not really a good speed to start with in the TL. The SI will be in 2nd gear at a 30MPH roll and right in his powerband. 30MPH in 2nd gear for you is out of your powerband and out of VTEC(High profile Cam opens up around 4800rpm). A 20MPH roll for you or a 45MPH roll would be more benefitial for you. However I would just race him from a dead stop. Good luck and be safe!!!

im not sure if the base tl tranny is same as the type s tranny, but the 5speed automatic on my car has some bad gearing. 30mph is BARELY within reach of 1st gear. its a bit over 5k rpm if i remember correct. you can drop it in 1st and floor it, but prepare to shift really soon. seems like most of the people who said 30mph is 2nd gear are people with 6mt. 30mph is 2nd gear for 6mt because their gears are shorter. now, i believe 1st gear can top out at 35mph, so a 40mph roll is pretty weak in my opinion because you will barely be at 4k in 2nd gear. 50 roll is good because you'll be near 5k in 2nd and go up to 65(end of 2nd) pretty quickly. 65 roll will be the absolute worst, because 3rd gear is extremely long and i absolutely hate it. who makes a 3rd gear go from 65-105? because of the gearing, a 90 roll will be more beneficial to the TL than a 70 roll. this is why i cant really beat an SI from a highway roll because of this shitty gearing.

Anyway why dont you guys race from a dead stop ? Other wise both of you should go from a 40 mph roll

i call bs, lol. 1st gear MIGHT reach 40 but thats if you go to the redline limit at 7100rpm. no one will start a race at 40 in 1st, because you will have to shift instantly. and no the 5speed automatic does NOT go up to 45. i have the 5speed automatic, so dont question me! get ur facts straight

I love rolls from a 45-50mph onwards....i dont like 60 since your in 3rd....
Also I like 20mph-25mph onwards since your sitting on a higher rpm range (VTACKKK)
you want to make sure your always in VTEC (4700-4800rpm+) and please make sure you shift close to 6500 rpm....this shift will ensure you are in the max power range for the longest....
Best of luck with the race but I have my money on the Si, hoping the driver knows how to work the gears/clutch....

if i remember correctly, vtec engages at 4950 RPM in the TL. i am not sure if if everybodys info is wrong or my info is wrong. i read that vtec engages in the TL at 4950 on this forum awhile back...

no, you're right. it happens at 4700.

maybe that is vtec engagement point for the 3.2L tl
check out post #8 on this thread, it refers to the 3.5l engine

With the engine's intake valve lift and opening duration continuously adjusted to suit the engine speed, the TL benefits with a broad torque curve and superior peak power. Although similar in design, the two engines feature different cam profiles, with the TL Type-S having higher lift and longer duration.
