gives us more detail! 3rd gear, at what speed did you start accelerating? And what civic was it? sedan, hatchback, Si? I believe Si has 160hp, combined with such light body, it's not surprising that you couldn't pull on him much.

Sidenote: My son's 98 Civic EX looks like any other Civic with a fartpipe....that is unless you notice the FMIC OR hear the blowoff valve (both betraying the fact that is has 190whp).

Yea man, the guy who had it before him obviously modded it, but it looked like he had all the shit gutted before the sale. he has the civic EX hatch. Isnt that the same engine as the SI for that year? He has 94k miles on it, i was in 3rd gear and started accelerating when i saw him catching up i say i floored it as soon as i upshifted from the red in 2nd to 3rd. I thought that was my power gear! I think we made need to run again. i refuse to beleive his fucking civic blew me that bad.

Well I just checked, and in 1994, the hp range is from 70hp to 125hp, and the hatch weighs 2108lbs. So if it was totally stock, it'd still be a decently quick car, but your TL should beat it easily, unless you were in 3rd gear at like 2000rpm.

First of all you didn't "race" him. When you are both doing 80-100 mph and then go, it's not a race, it's cat and mouse. Depening on which gear each of you are currently in will decide who will win.
At the 1/4 track with equal drivers the TL will win. On a road course the Civic would probably win (depending which track) autox the civic will win.
A real race is from a dead stop. None of this "roll" shit. Find out what mods he has, tell us what you have and go from there. You both seem very young and inexperienced to be racing on the streets at those speeds.

I got beat by a 94-96 EG Civic.. I now know how slow the TL-p is. From what I saw, he was a 5 speed with at least intake/exhaust.. i'm sure he had all the bolt ons. We did a run from 2nd gear and I pulled slightly until I hit the almighty 4th and he just pulled half a car on me.

We race in the Supras from a 60 roll to 130. I raced an Audi A3 Turbo recently from an 80 roll to 110. I used to race my buddies' Dinan 328 from 40 and 50 rolls. Only way to pull 1 1/2 bus lengths on him by 90 because of traction issues. From a dig, we'd end up almost even because of his RWD launch and the fact that I spin most of the way off the line unless I really ease off like I'm driving Ms. Daisy. Me vs. my friend's SR20 S13? From a 40 roll, I left him like he was parked. I shut down by 70 2 bus lengths in front of him after getting a look at his jaw touching his knees. Are those not races?
Cat and mouse would be running through traffic, where there are moving obstacles (other cars) that will determine whether or you have space to accelerate and catch the other guy. If I'm not mistaken, some magazines are starting to use the 60-130 as one aspect in their testing of new cars. I feel it's just as important as a 0-60 time, and more important than a 50-70.
Gears can be changed, final drives can be changed. Blaming your tranny, while it is reasonable, just doesn't cut it as a real excuse anymore. I was about to go with a lower FD to improve acceleration from a dig, but I do highway pulls also, so I decided to leave it alone. I can't be driving at 80 while the motor's revving at 4KRPM. Already now I'm running out of gears at around 120+ whereas I used to hit 130+ with another 1K+ RPMs to go. Stupid torque converter...

The way I see it is, people that aren't skilled enough to launch a car, and shift properly use the "roll" race technique. Currently there aren't any tracks where cars compete during "roll" races. Gearing does play a huge roll in it, but most competitions are from a 1/4 race, road course, auto x.
I'm guilty of a highway run here and there slowing down to 50, slapping it in sport shift and having some fun. If I lose, I want to race from a dig, because thats where I feel the true competion is. Launching, and shifting (in my case gate shifting)
"I'll get you in the twistes" or " Races aren't won in a straight line, they are lost in the turns" is said because SKILL is a huge part of racing, as well as setting up the car properly. A car with a lot less power can win races against cars way out of their leagues while being set up properly with a good driver. Road courses last much longer, and take a lot more skill than a quik pass down the 1/4 or a 60-130 blast in a straight line.
You made some good points though, I just don't see it as a real race. I'm sure some cars are faster than others with roll racing compared to off the line. For example an AWD car vs FWD is an example, but in the end no matter how u race, the AWD car is the faster car. It left faster, and got to speed faster. Unless it's horribly geared it might take forever to catch up to/pass it. (stock for stock, or mod for mod)
So in conclusion car races/competitions are usually judged by 0-60, 1/4, road course, and auto x times.

P.S. For me, a race is a race, no matter what the conditions, haha. Of course I wholeheartedly agree with you that driver skill is very important. I mean, how else did I take a Z4 through GG Park in my boat?

I own a stock engine 94 civic 5MT and my TL-S will destroy it. There is no way that car should have been in the same zip code as you.
Something is definitely wrong with your car or you found a perfect sleeper Civic. In that case lick your wounds and move on.

Anyhow, @ the OP, I think he just wants to be able to say that he pulled a 2G TL, and not have you be able to come back and say, "But I smoked you 17 times after that!".
