Neck to neck with an s2000

comin home from Santa Rosa, I was being tail gated with a white modded s2000 so I decided to change lanes and let him pass. He had other ideas as he started pacing me at around 70mph.. I figured i was gonna get whooped, but wanted to see how bad. I dropped down to 55mph, honked 3x and took off(2nd gear). We were even til about 80/85mph when I started to pull a half a car on him. I shut it down around 120 with me almost a car length ahead. He did the ricer fly by but I caught up with him and ran once more from 55mph.. at around 90mph we were even when I hit a dip and braked for 1/10th of a second.. We shut it down at around 110 with him being a fender ahead of me, but i felt I was creeping up on him..Oh in my 08'

seems right. i have an 04 6MT and i barely beat one with an extra passenger. theyre not as fast as i thought i guess. i see them as a good challenge being they have similar performance stock vs stock.

Well he was modded so i think I can handle a stock one.. Are S2000's mod friendly? I saw an orange modded one(turbo) a while ago it was insane how fast this guy pulled...

S2000s have a pretty large aftermarket. But like TLs, they don't respond well to just ordinary bolt ons. You have to turbo them to get any decent gains.

are the newer S2K's any faster than say, the first model/generation Honda came out with? - bigger motors?

^according to TOV, they did a few dyno runs with many S2000's. And the newer ones simply put out more power (243 hub hp) than the AP1.

From what I hear, the AP1s have a longer redline but the AP2s have more torque.

After reading on a few S2000 forums, the AP1 is more of a drivers car because of the fact that it gets a little more tail happy .

coming from an AP2 I can contribute some input here:

S2k's are very quick at slow speeds, however once you get up to say maybe 65 they lose their great power to weight ratio to wind resistance. At high speeds, the small little 4 banger doesnt have as much power (as say a TL) to battle the air pushing back on it. So you definitely had an advantage there. I raced my friends TL-s 6mt quickly from a slow roll when I still had my s2k and I pulled on him pretty good.

s2k's are pretty much maxed out power-wise from the factory. It is very difficult to squeeze out any power out of that car without doing extensive NA mods, even then, you are gaining very little for the thousands that you put into it. Only thing you can really do it go FI. Going this route, you will be surprising z06's and vipers. Close to 400 hp (or more depending on your setup) in a car that weights 2800 lbs.

AP1's have a 2.0 liter with 9k redline. AP2's have 2.2 liter with 8k redline. Both put out the same peak power, but the AP2 have more usable torque (still very little however).

Wish I still had my s2k sometimes, but the TL is just more practical. Only thing I dont miss is people calling my car cute or thinking its a miata. Loved to see the faces of mustang owners getting smoked by a 4 cylinder though. I will definitely be getting another one of these in the near future.

Nice race.

I remember running an s2k from about 55-60mph and granted he got a head start, he did keep on pulling. I'm guessing my car downshifted all the way to second and that held me back. I think he was modded with basic bolt ons.

^ agreed lol
you could always use the triptronic right? leave it in second and you're off! seemed to be the only advantage i had on frankie's TL - plus a few bolt on mods.
