to the OP - glad that you made it out unharmed... also pleasing to see that ACS helped you out when u really needed them... it is tough being stranded and much worst when you are in the middle of nowhere...

That is crazy. Sounds like Acura took good care of you. Glad it worked out

I've never been impressed with the roadside services from Acura

Please elaborate...
I don't need to provide details to you for me to learn a lesson, my life almost being ended was good enough. However if you are curious to know, you should just ask under that context.

I don't want to provide details, because I do not know who is reading and don't want to put the dealership that was nice enough to me to help me out in jeapordy. However it was my fault and it was due to not torquing the bolts to proper spec on my part.

So anyone changing their own brakes or any other mods that require caliper removal, please be safe and take out the torque wrench to make sure they are torqued properly.

wow, that story was crazy, you had me at the edge of my seat with chills down my spine! I'm glad everything is okay, and worked out in your favor. What exactly is Acura Client Services? Is it like a purchased road side assistance, in case your car breaks down? I just want to know how on earth you didn't have to pay for it?

Glad to hear there was a positive outcome to your story. I guess a good lesson learned here, make sure you torque to the proper specs. Kudos to Acura Client Services as well, haven't had to use the roadside assistance yet, but if I do, I hope I get the same level of service.

glad to hear your all safe.

but out of curiosity, wouldnt shifting the car into L be the same as using SS and downshifting yourself? just for future reference.

Yeah it would.. but I mean I didnt think of all that at the time.. LoL. Plus shifting it into "L" doesnt that drop it into 1st gear? I dont know how good that is at that speed.

omg i hope my caliper bolts are on tight!

wait.. maybe i've never taken them off.. I did the brakes once... hmm.. 6MT doesn't require caliper removal right?

Glad you're ok!

Not sure how I feel about this. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you're OK. But you are happy to let someone else foot the bill for your own mistake. The cost is eventually passed on to the rest of us. I don't like that.

BTW, spec for 6MT caliper bolt is 125ft/lbs.

It does if you turn the rotors off of the car.... If just replacing pads, no.

Doesn't the "BRAKE" (the same light that the parking brake uses) illuminate when the fluid is low? It did on my old Accord...

Found the manual online...if you had no fluid, the light should have been on.

Also, note that the braking system is split into two channels....e.g. LF and RR wheel, RF and LR wheel. A complete failure is theoretically very close to impossible.

^ isnt like 90 percent of the braking done by the front calipers, so on the OPs car those were the ones that were messed up, hence causing the car to feel like the brakes were not working at all

Yes, but the two front brakes are designed to be on different channels. If one caliper came off and all of the fluid in that channel escaped, the other channel (read opposite front caliper) would be unaffected. Opposite wheels are braked so that a driver might still retain directional control in the event of a failure.

BTW, dual-channel master cylinders have been required by law since 1967 just to prevent such events.

its about 70% front braking on a fwd car like the TL
Yanking the gearshift straight down would work and wont put it into 1st unless below rpm limits--the trans has a lot of slowing power if you really need it- as demonstrated

The computer still runs everything- the shifter handle operates 3 microswitches located under that panel- those send a ~shift request signal~ to the brains based on lever position
Not a cable/arm hooked direct to trans shift mechanism like older cars

few realize how tight 125 ft lbs is
as example the wheels are 80
Now try and get 125 with a normal ratchet without a breaker bar extension on it...not going to be right
Shop tools put out close to 125 normal operating pressure

Nope - shifting it into L drops it into the lowest possible gear. Essentially the same thing as downshifting a few times except the computer skips to the lowest gear right away.

A couple of miles from my house, there was a fatal crash yesterday involving a Lexus ES350 that was going over 100 mph. According to the news their accelerator got stuck and their brakes failed!! It was a CHP officer and his family who died. Very sad story. I'm glad to hear that you and your sister were ok.

Sad story but a bit unbelievable.. I can't imagine both failures and an experienced CHP officer not being able to slow down the vehicle.
