My transmission story

My transmission story
First of all I'll apologize for the long post. I've got a 2006 TL auto, 64,000 miles. I've had this car a year, and was actually getting ready to change out fluid and 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches, when my transmission tanked. Completely let go while driving New Year's day. For a couple of weeks prior, I had been having a long hesitation when shifting from reverse to drive while cold, and a few hard shifts. My extended warranty bought me a brand new transmission from Acura, and I got the car back yesterday. All is well now, but a couple questions. First off, I check the trans fluid regularly, and it seemed relatively clean, no burnt smell, proper level. Besides the hesitation (which I inaccurately blamed on the cold weather) there really was no other indication a failure was imminent. Is there any other way to tell it's headed south? I'm very experienced working on my own vehicles, and can diagnose most issues that come up. I will be very diligent in the upkeep of this new trans, and I'd like to switch to the Redline Racing/D4 combo. Should I let the transmission "break in" before switching fluid? My final question revolves around the design of the transmission. My original had the filter housing with 2 bolts in close proximity to the dipstick, where the new one does not have this. It does have a large round UFO looking device towards the rear of the vehicle from the dipstick, almost directly on top of the housing (I don't have pics of this yet). Is this an updated design? Any knowledge on this is appreciated. Thank you.

the UFO thing you said might be a jet kit (or some thing like that) that pump into a ATF cooler, I notice that in some 2nd gen TL got the recall for AT. Other member will shine light into this.
