MY GOD!!! jptl04, glad to see you're still alive. I feel so safe in my TL when I hear of stories like this. Although, a small guy like me would have probably suffered a few more injuries. That drunk driver should just be executed! It's just horrible when clowns like that put other people's lives in such great danger. Just today I actually saw an accident occur. It wasn't as severe as this, but I'm wondering how the girl (completely at fault) got her license. She pulls all the way to the right on a two-lane street to make an illegal U-turn all over the double yellow lines. She goes for it and didn't see somone coming on her left and BANG!

I can only assume you did this yourself when changing out the steering wheel....cause Acura would never send you out with a car with a defect like that and it not directly be contributable to the owner in some way. Tell me it aint so!

It great to see that all the safety items did their job. I doubt the insurance company is going to let you pick apart your car and also give you the money for those parts. Usually a total loss means that the entire car is theirs and all you will get back is the money they appraise it for. It is also great that you kept your receipts. Before pictures and receipts will be your greatest bargaining chip to recover the proper value of your car. Good luck and get well!

Insurance companies usually will not compensate for aftermarket parts, or they will compensate very little. If you can, I say swap all the aftermarket parts with OEM parts and keep anything that is considered an additional mod (not part of factory). That way, the insurance company will be compensating for a basically stock TL and you can keep your goodies.

sorry it happened but at least you are ok.. I had something similar in my 05 late october. I had 37776 miles on it and the insurance company gave me 29,773.00 towards my new car.

As for after market parts, if you have the receipts and so forth they might pro rate the value of anything aftermarket.

Good luck...I did not read all the posts so I am sorry if I am repeating anyone, but I would want to be sure the other driver was charged and does a nice term in a cell...

I just saw your post. I'm glad you made it out relatively unscathed JP! Yours is probably the second amazing TL crash survivor story that I have seen in my ~2 years here on AZ. The other one was a thread here but actually posted on the S2K forum since the victim was also an S2000 owner.

On the insurance, I would be interested to hear if you succeeded in getting their permission to take out your modded stuff. If you have your receipts, I certainly hope so. Do let us know.

Best wishes for a complete recovery!

If you do have all the receipts for the mods/additional items on the car your insurance must compensate you for those parts if they demand they remain on the vehicle. Literally, from my experience in the Body shop arena, they would total the vehicle, come up with the basic vehicle restitution amount, then add in the replacement cost for all aftermarket parts damaged and/or remaining on the vehicle.. Even my own insurance worked/works this way.... (Install/labor charges did not apply)

Bottom line, demand to see the figures as if your TL was stock - then the figure with the mods included.. Kinda the same way you negotiate the price of a new car prior to adding in the idea of a trade-in etc.. Insurance companies will always try to short you - just be on your toes with the numbers/final restitutions..

Good luck - like everyone else mentioned,, thank the man above that you are still around..

YMMV, but that wasn't true with me. One of my other cars was broken into and I had an aftermarket stereo deck stolen out of the console. My insurance paid me for the deck (even though I had no receipts to prove how much it cost, they took my word for it), the broken bezels, the broken window, and the window re-tint. My insurance company's policy was this: if the aftermarket mod was installed in such a way that it could be considered a "permanent" part of the vehicle, like the aftermarket deck that was installed in place of the stock deck, then it is covered under the comprehensive portion of the insurance just like the factory deck would have been. On the other hand, something that would not be considered "permanently installed", like a subwoofer box that is just laying in the trunk, would not be covered. In this guy's case, almost ALL of his mods should be covered. Especially the body kit and wheels. If the insurance company covers the cost of the mods, then he is no longer entitled to salvage the mods off of the wrecked vehicle and those mods and the vehicle then become the property of the insurance company.

Not all insurance is created equal and if your insurance company doesn't cover your aftermarket mods in this way, you should consider switching to one that does.

You have a really good insurance company Desert_TL.

When my previous car was totaled, AAA told me if I had receipts for anything in the car purchased within the last 30 days, they will compensate it. As for aftermarket parts, they don't really cover it. The compensated $50 for my DEI car alarm with remote start.

I've switched to a new company since then, but I doubt my coverage is as good as yours.

I have a friend that had and 04 RSX that he took up to the mtns.. slipped and fell down the side of the mtn. His roof caved in, whole car was shot and walked out with just a few scratches. With the insurance money, he got an 05 RSX... Acura's are the best.

WOW! I am in shock. I dont know what to say aside from the fact that I am glad to see you are OK and it's just steel. It can be replaced, but you cant.

That's some crazy damage, but it seems like you held up OK which is the most important thing in the long run.

Get better soon.
