My seafoam adventure
So I met up with AZer tihomirbg tonight to seafoam my car...
To my disappointment, there was no big cloud of smoke! I wanted to do 90-100MPH on the highway and have a large cloud of smoke behind me... or at least 40MPH on a local road and suffocate everyone with my smoke.
Not even one tiny cloud!!
Guess my engine is pretty clean already.

yeah...kinda weird huh? trust me, you'll be able to smell it for a bit on wot runs. for our cars, it seems that it only "smokes out" if you rev in place right after you start up the car...dunno if we're actually supposed to though?

did you let it dwell for 15 minutes after stalling the car though the vac intake via seafoam?

do you use shell gas or chevron gas or hess gas? If so, they put some pretty good additives in the gas that help keep your motor clean.

pretty sure your car doesnt have much carbon buildup...i did it on my integra and that thing smoked up like a car doing a crazy stand still burnout...another good thing about SF is it actually let you pinpoint any exhaust leaks if you have any

geez read the diy a few times and understand about the smoke
I can make an engine smoke about halfway thru the can- its all about going slow and small amounts! If you let it get sucked in fast or rev the engine while doing it- it goes right thru and doesnt get a chance to clean anything. Most of the smoke is exhaust heat and seafoam oil reacting- not carbon blowout
DO NOT REV while parked!!!!!! Supposed to let it idle for a few minutes on restart, then a few minutes drive at less than 2000 to stabilize the engine then its 4000 rpm with some quick blast to 5000- not redline while all this loose stuff is blowing and oozing around!
Read and follow the directions and get great results- 1 16 ounce can in 1/2 tank of gas of regular liquid seafoam is the cleaning dose.
When seafoaming engine: Make sure to clean the TB butterfly plate too
Use Deep Creep = seafoam sold in an 16 oz aerosol paint spray can- best way to control amount going into vac port and used to clean throttle cable assembly and clean TB plate- its multi purpose stuuf!

Okay, thanks for the translations. Can someone tell me exactly where the heck the TB butterfly plate is and how to clean it?
I wish there was a truly comprehensive thread on sea foaming. I might be too ADD to read through some of the posts, but it seems to me that you have to really piece together a bunch of different posts to figure out the whole sea foam process... That is really not good enough and a new comprehensive DIY thread should be created for the garage.

anyone with more than 30k miles will benefit for a proper seafoam treatment
Look in the Seafoam DIYs for each gen- look in the last few pages for the newest info
Here is the quikie version
remove plastic engine cover- locate rubber vacuum line with squeeze clamp-
remove that hose from its metal nipple- Seafoam- actually Deep Creep works best there-its 100 % seafoam in a spray can with straw dispensor for precise control
You use small amounts at a time into the vac port and that does the work for you.
Add 1 can liquid seafoam to 1/2 tank of gas.
Since we are all volunteers here that write the DIYs- and it can take several hours putting together the best pics and procedure tips- answer all the basic questions etc....

remove the rubber snout and airbox cover from the engine- look inside the TB assembly for a round plate that seals it! move the throttle and see the plate open!!

its a long process to make the DIY I want- then it has to be approved--improved by 2 mods- changes made, then checked by the mega of all mods, then posted as the definitive seafoam guide---eventually

Yeah, I'm not yet sold on this stuff either. I did the DC and SF treatment exactly and I can tell no difference in mileage, which is about the only thing I have to go by. And yes, I did get some smoke during the initial drive while waiting for the engine to smooth out, but no smoke after that. My 04 6MT wasn't running rough or anything else, I just figure I'd give it a try and see what happens (63,500 miles). I've only run 2 tanks of 92 octane gas (don't know what brand, it's sold at the gas station on base here at Minot AFB, ND) through it since the half tank was empty. Before treatment, I always got pretty good mileage anyway (28-30 highway, 26 mixed). Maybe I just have a really clean engine, or maybe this stuff is snake oil. Don't know.

you either did not follow the directions correctly- made your own directions up as you went,- or think that the smoke tells you anything beside the reaction of hi-detergent oils and the hot cat convertor~
rob- have you removed the lower intake resonator box??- a good free mod for the K&N - feeds to mass quantities of air to the air filter box!!

Seafoam is as much about cleaning and prevention of mass buildup of carbon in the engine-
prevention is critical to keeping these engines at peak performance and long life
EGR plugged passages/ports contributes to poor running and can affect mileage

1. I FOLLOWED THE INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY.
2. I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE SMOKE OTHER THAN IT WAS PRESENT.
Don't put words into my mouth. If other people on here were wowed by their SF experience, great. I wasn't, and it wasn't because I didn't follow directions. Based on my experience, my advice to others is to save your money.

Why do people find the need to attack the posters who are helpful for instructing use of sea foam? I don't care if you do that, but at least have the respect to make an anti-sea foam thread somewhere else.

If you dont trust seafoam for whatever reasons- look into BG44 or Wynns products and use something!!!
The inside of todays engines are crud factories- largely due to what they add to gas these days.
If you had 1 experience, you are far from the person to decry any product.

Personally, I didn't see much of an improvement at all but then again, I think my engine was pretty clean to begin with. I'm not knocking SF at all! Its worked for so many people that it doesn't make sense to. Plus its only like $7 for a bottle so why not try it?? I didn't do the Deep Creep method though so I'm gonna try that out before winter rolls around.

I had 45k miles at the time. Must have just been a clean engine. Hey everybody, my engine is cleaner than YOURS! na na na na naaa!

I had 45k miles at the time. Must have just been a clean engine. Hey everybody, my engine is cleaner than YOURS! na na na na naaa!

Someday I will get over to Harbor Freight Tools and buy a boroscope
Then pics of how nice and clean it is inside the engine will prove all!
I have watched you tube vids- boroscope vids- of the cleaning in process-
its a sidelink off the Wynns cleaning vids- interesting to see.
Had the heads off an old V8 today- thick crusty layers of carbon on the piston tops!!!
Bet it ran like the crud it was filled with. Combustion likes a clean metal surface to bounce off of, any disturbance is loss of torque
Then pics of how nice and clean it is inside the engine will prove all!

All it means is the oil failed to pick up and contaminents and take them to the filter!
It should also suspend a lot of material- making the color change.
Good engine oil has detergents in it- so it helps clean as it works~
Penzoil uses it as a sales tool- their synthetic cleans 30 percent better than (their) leading conventional oil- or maybe even other brands!!

i think you need to drive it a little more. i used the deep creep and spent like 20 minutes spraying it in haha. since then my mileage is down to like 23mpg in the city which is still a big improvement over 17

At a recent meet we foamed a gen3, when he left the parking lot he did a full throttle romp, and smoke spewed big time- there is a pic in the Sacramento meet thread-
2 people drove up to us- Is your friends car supposed to do that? Is it on fire?

is that everyone seafoams the gas and the vacuum intake at the same time that is not based in the convenience of probably having purchased deep creep and sea foam at the same time?
