My Acura is taking all my $$$

Took my car in to the dealership for a timing belt job $700 labor, dealer calls me to tell me my oil pump is leaking and all seals need to be replaced a total of 9? $500, my power steering pump is leaking $350, valve adjustment $500, and replacing crank and can shaft seals $150? I though that was part of the timing belt job? I will never go back to the stealership again. I just don't believe there's 9 seals in the oil pump. I'm thinking to doing the power steering myself and replace all seals for $8. I was going to do timing belt myself but I was too lazy at the time and now I'm regretting it.

did you inspect the car to see if you are in fact leaking any fluids or are just taking their word for it?

Damn, go to a reputable indie shop instead. Much cheaper! When I got timing belt replacement + water pump 50,000 miles ago, it ran me about $600 total.

Yeah I noticed a lot of oil by timing belt area last time I changed my oil. I'm at 103k man I thought Acuras were solid cars and lasted 150k-200k miles with out problems like this except timing belt ofcourse

At this point they should only be charging you for the parts, because the work involved for doing the timing belt and replacing all the seals is the same - they can just change the seals out when they have all the parts off. They're trying to get more money out of you.

That's exactly how my indie shop did it - I was in for an oil leak issue, and since I was almost due for a timing belt, all I paid was the parts for the job, no additional labor.

can you be any more ignorant!?
seals go out, man.

it's just the nature of the beast. rubber seals deteriorate. happens on all makes and models.
your car is still reliable as EVER.

maybe you're just mad that you spent a lot on the labor. I would be too.
again, we have a VERY active Houston group. every one is always working on something here. and we're all friends. so, if you need help on something, grab one of us!!

tbh the leak from the power steering pump is probably what caused all that gunk by the timing belt.

your oil pump is probably a very minor leak like most people here.

get the pump fixed, dont bother with the oil pump seals.

valve adjustment is part of the ~105k maintenance. You should've saw that one coming, sorry.

$500 for the valve adjustment is way too much- if you're going to get it done, I'd check out a local Honda dealership- when I had my TB done, they advised the valve adjustment and it was $289 (I have not yet had it done as I'm only at 97K miles). I'd recommend the 2nd opinion as well.

Yeah well maybe I'm being ignorant but my Lexus Is250 has 170k and no issues, I told the dealer to go ahead and do the timing belt, tensioner, adjuster, idler, oil pump seals, and valve adjustment since is due, $1950 plus tax darn and i only owe $900 on the car but it needs to be done and is cheaper than buying a new car. I just hope it lasts another 100k miles. For next time where's a good Indie shop in Houston? Yeah I was thinking valve adjustment was expensive I'll call my local honda dealers.

Lol wow expensive as hell....i guess once i reach the 105k miles i better start racking up cash around 100k or 95k miles. I have a 100k phobia so i always trade my cars in the minute they hit 80k or so.

The Acura isn't taking all your money.

The Dealership is.

Its your fault you didn't negotiate the price or take it to an independent shop or to a Honda dealer or even have the local DIY group help you out.

you guys keep mentioning the valve adjustment.

so i asked my mechanic about it yesterday when i was replacing the spark plugs. he told me it is not necessary to do it because most car manufactured after 2000 are hydraulic ( i dont know what he means by hydraulic) and do not have to adjust it.

any opinions?

^exhaust valves get tight over time. the heat makes them get tight.
intake valves get loose over time.

they should be adjusted back to stock specs. butt, many find that they arent that off, thus why some say its not needed.

he must be thinking of BMWs with hydraulic lifters.

It's not the same with our J series engines. i would take it somewhere else if he's not even familiar with our engines.

To get back to the point of this thread though... I'm thinking the car was driven hard or something. I work with a guy that has an 05 with 160k miles, all hes ever done to it is regular maintenance. Thats the the only explanation i can come up with man!

I'm sure it's just the service writer going overboard. That's how they make money. $500 for a valve adjustment is crazy.

That's true.. They usually get paid on commission, so the more the shop makes, the more they make. Its crooked for sure.

I hate how people continue to get ripped off for the 105k service despite the fact that there are a bunch of people on this site that have been though it. I kinda want to take my car to the Acura place here to see what they try to get me for. Actually last time I took it in to get the suspension checked they wouldnt even look at it because it was too low for their lift. I guess they had no blocks of wood lying around to drive it up on

last time i dropped off my car at dealer for recall, the service writer called me i needed p/s pump, timing belt unit, and trans. flush and quote me over $1500.
so i told him it's funny that car had just replaced timing belt unit and did trans flush less than a year ago and why do i need to replace p/s pump when there is no signs of leak or noise.

he paused then, said..... he just goes by mileage and try to prevent the problem
WTF??!?!

i will only go to dealership for recall, period.

hahaha one of the guys I work with paid like $500 for a battery cable for his BMW and something is wrong with his active headlights now they're stuck and don't move but at least they point straight ahead

evidently the headlights on his BMW would move a little in corners to adjust the beam of light

can you even change the oil yourself in the BMW? or do you need special dealership tools? lol

Nice cars, but expensive to maintain
