MPG going 80mph?

Hi,

I was wondering what is everyone getting when they are averaging 80mph?

I have been getting free oil change from my dealership. I only gotten it 2x and I been noticing my mpg is low. When my TL has the factory OEM oil, I got atleast 30ish MPG,

I recenly gotten a new job and i drive like 30 miles straight, going 80mph and I havnt gotten in the 30's yet. I been averaging 26-27mpg recently with my new full tank.

Since, i get free oil change...im thinking they are using crap oil in my TL.

The free oil change should be the same oil they use when you bought the car. You can ask them to upgrade the oil to the mobil1 (i paid 39.47 for a mobil1 oil change).

And before anyone tells me to change it myself, I tried, the fools at the dealership tighten the drain plug up to the point where I could not get it off. On the bright side 39.47 for mobil1 is not a bad price imho.

i kept it around 80mph on a trip to my wife's grandmother's house (approx. 100 miles) and got 28-29mpg...my speed varied at some points, though, with construction going on for about 8 miles...

The factory oil contained additives to assist proper seating of the metal parts.
The dealer and many private shops use whatever the local oil supplier sells at the best (cheapest ) price. Try to look surprised!

Pretty much anyone but you, will overtighten the drain plug
Thats a bad thing and CAN lead to failure of the sealing washer,
stripped threads and worse
Do it yourself at home with a few tools and a torque wrench
Use same torque wrench to check wheel lugs if anyone but you rotates the tires

Spend the money saved on labor to buy the best oil you can find.
Opinion varies- I like the Penzoil Platinum Fully Synthetic & K&N oil and air filters

NOTE:
Mobil 1 is no longer the same Grade A Formula it was before
Now a second tier base oil used
Their "NEW" Mobil "High Mileage" is Fully Synthetic- the good stuff

You really have to read the fine print on everything these days!

the stripped oil pan thing happened with my 03TL-s.acura wanted over $700 to replace it. when i said no, they replaced the bolt with a longer one. problem fixed. $6 for the bolt plus an oil change for like $60.

I've gotten 30 to 33 mpg on long-term 80-mph runs when I keep it in sixth gear the whole way. Last winter I drove home from Ottawa, stopped for gas in Frackville, PA, and the trip computer said I had averaged 70 mph for that drive (due to the slow stretch in Wilkes-Barre when the sun was squarely in my eyes) with fuel economy of 30 mpg (filled up in the morning on the way out of Ottawa, filled up later the same day in Frackville, read the trip computer then, and then continued on home).

In 2005 I was still averaging 28 mpg after a run across the Everglades on I-75 at 90 to 100 mph the whole way. That was fun.

The original poster doesn't say if he has the 5AT or the 6MT. I'm sure the 5AT must get slightly poorer fuel economy at speeds where the 6MT would be in sixth gear.

all 3 of my trips calculators give me 34 MPG when i average 78MPH. My MID says 34, my trip computer on navi says 34 and my manual claculations say about 33-35 MPG. I have a 5AT and put in a new airfilter, cabin and engine, about 3K miles ago.

sorry...I have a 05 Auto.

Its just strange that i havent been able to get in the 30s mpg. I have reset the trip computer each time during fuel up. I will fuel up again and reset the trip...sometimes again this week.

I will call the dealership and ask what kind of oil they used.

If you really want to know what your highway mpg is, it would be better to reset the trip computer after you are on highway at your cruising speed.

When I did have the ability to travel 80 mph plus we were achieving high 20s to low 30s dependent upon terrain. Presently here in the islands of hawaii, your lucky to get up to 70 without worrying about either smacking into an all-week long Sunday driver or them cherries going off.

They must be better drivers or have better cars. I'm meticulous about maintenance on my car, drive long stretches on flat roads with cruise control, record and compute mpg for every tank and have averaged "only" 26.2mpg combined over 57,000 miles in an '05 6mt TL. Sure I've seen 34mpg at 80 mph...on a downhill.

Ethanol makes a difference as well

I live in Connecticut and there is 10% ethanol. When I visit my hometown in upstate NY, my trip back averages 2 MPG better because there is no ethanol. I can't believe the difference. I drive around 80 and get 29, sometimes 30 MPG on the way back to CT.

Resetting the trip computer after you are on the freeway only tricks the computer
You use far more gas leaving the station and getting on the freeway and up to speed than it takes to maintain that speed
The computer is not a factual measure of the fuel useage
Only basic math with fuel used divided by total miles driven = MPG
And you can fill anytime you want- its all about total fuel and total miles
do a month long average to know how you car is running
And try Seafoam! see gen 2 thread Seafoamed the Ol TL

Smile 05 TL Auto

I just made 2 trips to Denver and back from Omaha which is 530 miles one way. Kept her on cruise as much as possible set at 84MPH and got 27 the first trip and 28 the second.

I was getting 11 to 12 before in my Tahoe so I certainly can not complain.

I have a 5AT and have taken it several times to Kentucky and back (900 miles each way) and every week I'm on the highway here at least 30 mins or so. I average about 75-80mph unless there is road construction. I have checked my MPG and its been between 30-34 MPG. On that trip to Kentucky, I have to stop for gas only twice usually...starting with a near full tank...

On my recent trip to Las Vegas and SoCal I averaged 28-29 MPG with an avg. speed of 71 MPH. Once I hit highway 5 I was going 80-90mph.

Just did a road trip from chicago to St. Louis and back:

80 mph the whole way on cruise control --> 32-33mpg. When my car was stock and brand new, i only got about high 20's. Now I have an air intake and about 70,000 miles --> always got my oil changes at acura, and most recently just got one about 1,000 miles ago.
