Moving cars get really close...
I notice that when I'm passing by cars or if they're passing next to me, they always come towards my lane as they get right next to me.
I don't know if I'm just imagining it or if they really are coming closer as they get right next to me.
I thought about it for a long time and couldn't figure it out....
Here's my theory.... when you turn your head to the right to look at something, the average driver will tend to slightly move the vehicle to that side. When you look to your left at something, the car tends to move over to that side as well..... the longer you look at a particular side, the more the vehicle moves.
So, that being all that I can come up with, I've come to the highly scientific conclusion that people are looking at the car and staring at it because it looks so good.

They teach you in accident avoidance school (Bondurant) that you go where you are looking. The challenge is NOT to look at the other car, but to look where you want to go, hopefully someplace safe and NOT near the other car!!

Eh, if that's the problem when you look over ... just let go of the wheel. This will prevent you from moving toward them (if that's the case) and will scare the living hell out of the other driver (if they are the ones creaping towards your car)

Ever since I got my license, I've noticed that on two lane roads that have an occasional passing lane, people who drive a strict 55 for miles will speed up to 70 as soon as they get to these areas. It's like they can't stand to have people pass them. I think a psychology/sociology major could write their thesis on this phenomenon.
I still remember about 15 years ago being in a line of cars on a two lane road during a holiday weekend. When we finally got to a passing lane, the lead car went just fast enough so he and only a few others could pass the rolling road blocks in the right lane. I was about 15 cars back. A vette in front of me pulled out into the on-coming lane (double yellow line, but no opposing traffic for miles) and cranked it up to well into the triple digits - leaving the entire bottleneck in his rearview mirror. It was probably the best use of horsepower and chutzpah I've ever seen.

ayethetiense: Was your last car a SUV by any chance? I noticed the same thing you have when I started driving a sedan after having a SUV. I just got used to it and trust the other person to not crash into me.

no, it was actually an Accord. 98, yellow with the 'extreme' body kit. when people saw me comin, they got out of my way. i always used to laugh at how people would get out of the way for me. having a yellow car had a great advantage, people would see me and would just move right away. un4tunately the cops would be able to see me from a mile away too...

In the 4 days I've owned my new TL, I've noticed the same "creeping issue". From the posts above, it may be b/c of both me and the other driver: I'm watching them b/c I don't want them too close to my baby and they're looking at the most beautiful car on the highway these days!
BTW, last night, w/ only about 220 miles on the odo, I hit the throttle kinda hard for the first time. (I know I should wait a little longer but...) YOWSA!! This cars eats up the road and leaves everyone else in the dust!!
(I promise I won't do it again until another 400 miles)
