Most members here like the Mobil 1 Synthetic. That price is pretty good, but it is a pain in the ass for the rebate, nonetheless, good price on the filter and oil. Most (known companies) synthetics should be fine.

Not a bad deal on the oil and filter, but the rebate is for any future purchase between April 1st and August 31st, so we couldn't use that rebate now anyway

that's a hell of a good deal! And for those of you that don't already know this, when you do buy Mobil1, buy the EXTENDED PERFORMANCE. That is the ONLY Mobil1 that is truely fully synthetic. The regular ones aren't.

last year or so, the govt changed the oil labeling and making rules and several makers went with a cheaper blended oil base rather than the pure synthetic

Mobil1 changed - using same mobil1 name but now using the blended base
They `renamed` the good stuff `Extended performance`/high mileage
So thats your proof- want more go see their website and read up on the oils, thats where I learned about it

Let's not blow a gasket, stay calm!

From the Mobil site:
Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a high-endurance motor oil designed for longer service intervals. It is a fully synthetic formulation......

Yeah, they're pretty cagey about not advertising that M1 is not fully synthetic anymore. Their blurb1 for M1EP says "fully synthetic", for M1 it only says "synthetic".

Mobil 1 Extended Performance
You've never seen an oil like this before. Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a high-endurance motor oil designed for longer service intervals. It is a fully synthetic formulation that helps extend engine life, reduce oil breakdown and minimize engine wear -- all while helping to keep your engine clean. Improvements that add up to exceptional protection for 15,000 miles. Guaranteed.

Mobil 1
If you want total engine protection, excellent fuel economy and a product recommended for applications under warranty, you want Mobil 1. The world's leading synthetic motor oil, it features a proprietary
SuperSyn anti-wear technology that provides performance beyond conventional motor oils. Technology that allows Mobil 1 to exceed the toughest standards of Japanese, European and U.S. car builders -- and to provide exceptional protection against engine wear, under normal or even the most extreme conditions.

Remember, the new industry or gov't rules allows oil companies to now label synthetic blend oil as "synthetic", but only type IV oils are truly synthetic.

01tl4tl is correct. Castrol was selling a cheaper refined blended dino oil as synthetic. Mobil sued and lost. In order to be price competitive Mobil 1 starting selling a similiar blend. The started calling their fully synthetic Mobil 1 Extended and increased the price. Mobil 1 Extended is the only oil that goes in my vehicles. I work for the company that owns Castrol.

thank you dj5 and nfn

You really have to read the fine print on everything,,this is a great example of why

dj-
can you confirm that some years ago kendall and castol gtx were the same product marketed in 2 brand names/schemes- 1 for racers 1 for street, then it was cheaper to sell it just as castrol gtx- ~race proven technology for the street!

Not this dumb argument again.. btw.. that is a good deal. I'd go ahead and cash in on the rebate x2 @ that AAP price. Why not? Next two oil changes & filter for $20.. sounds good to me.

btw.. you guys may want to verify if the Mobil coupon is stackable with the AAP deal. Mobil 1 says can't combine with any other offer, coupon, discount card. I assume that means Mobil offers & coupons but it may apply to vendor coupons as well.. not sure..

i looked again to see what you guys are saying on the mobil 1 site, and it does say what you are saying in no specific words, but if you click on a mobil 1 product like 5w20, and then click on the product sheet it will say fully synthetic...i will try to get the link

Product Description

Mobil 1 5W-20 is a high performance fully synthetic engine oil designed to exceed the industry's toughest standards and outperform all conventional oils. Mobil 1 5W-20 is engineered to help keep your engine running like new and extend engine life. Mobil 1 technology has been selected as original equipment by leading car builders such as Chevrolet Corvette, Cadillac, Mercedes Benz AMG, Porsche, Dodge Viper, and Dodge Ram SRT 10.

Features and Benefits

Mobil 1 5W-20 is made with a proprietary blend of high performance synthetic basestocks fortified with an advanced additive system. Mobil 1 5W-20 is the new viscosity grade recommended for many vehicles manufactured by Honda, Ford, and in 2005 Chryslers. This oil is uniquely designed to provide unsurpassed levels of performance, cleaning power and engine protection, while meeting the demanding ILSAC GF4 performance standards.

i dragged that right off the mobil 1 site and its mobil 1 5w20, not the product data from the extended stuff....

This is beating a dead horse.. for the millionth time on the millionth board.

No one can find a valued definition of synthethic, full synthetic, 100% synthetic.. In many cases the terminology is not used by factual composition but is used to describe performance over blends or conventional bases.

The fact is Mobil 1 - Ext. Performance has more SuperSyn (PAO) than Mobil 1. The SuperSyn PAO has a long carbon chain which makes it a great lubricating material with anti-wear / anti-crystalizing properties prone to high temp applications. Make your own judgement on classification.

It's better to find the independent studies performed on these oils and judge for yourself. Mobil 1 is a great product, so is RP and Amsoil. For me.. whatever's cheaper at the time. These products will reduce wear and extend the life of our motors. Don't worry so much on the dumbass details.

So if I purchase the oil now, I can wait until after April 1st to send the rebate form in, and still get the $10 back even though it was purchased before April 1st? Sounds like a great deal to me....

Well then you can't use the rebate along with the sale price since the sale ends 3/25 Still $29.99 isn't a bad deal. Still might pick some up.

I totally missed that.. worth a try though. The filter is almost $10 alone.. so that's $4 / qt of M1-EP if you do pay $30.

No--read it again
MEANS:
for purchases at a store for DIY, or service done at a shop that sells mobil1
between april1 and aug 31--and your `dated receipt` between april1- aug 31

not buy in march and change it yourself in april- with a march purchase receipt!!

what color is the sky in your world anyway?

I went to Advanced Auto today and of course, they dind't have any Extended Performance 5W-20...at all. They claim Mobil doesn't make it (BS, I was at autozone less than 5 minutes before returning a tool rental and they had it), but the guy said to just get regular Mobil 1, it's the same. I told him that it's a synthetic blend, not fully synthetic like the Extended Performance. Well, I guess Mobile still writes "Fully Synthetic" on the front of the regular Mobile 1 bottles, because there it was plain as day. They only had 4 Qts in stock anyways, so I didn't buy anything and left, but here's the question:

The bottle says fully synthetic, the website says fully synthetic....but is it now?
