Minor damage, hit from behind. Is making a claim unreasonable?
I was at a stop sign and got "tapped" on my rear bumper. Unfortunately, the screw in the guys front license plate left a perfect philips-head impression right in the middle of my bumper.
He was amazed that I wanted his insurance information.
I'm not even sure if it can be fixed. But am I unreasable to file a claim against him?

No it is not unreasonable. He caused the damage, and you have a right to a claim.
edit:
However, maybe instead of going through insurance, perhaps he can just pay for the damage. This way it does not affect either party's insurance.

Not unreasonable at all. He did scratch your paint and should've been watching where he was going. Probably won't even dent his deductible, though....

Would you rather live with the damage, however slight, caused by someone else?

I would not even hesitate to file a claim on "his" insurance.... Like others have mentioned, he caused the damage and you shouldn't have to pay nor live without compensation.... Even if you decide not to fix it atleast you have the compensation to justify the damage.
This is by no means a vindictive or "insurance" fraud thought or action. This is a perfect example of what insurance is for. Your insurance company should not even be involved.....

My friend drove my car and got "hit from behind" last summer, in the rear bumper. The car was parking right in the last meter spot and a young kid ran his whatever old coupe right behind my car, however, he hit the rear bumper before he could fully stop and left the screw mark out there. My friend just shaked the head and yelled to that kid, then, that's it.
At night, my friend said he would reimburse me the cost of the repair, but I didn't blame him, (actually I haven't tried to fix it yet), I know this happens every day and night in this damn city... but, if I was him, I would ask that kid to fix it or pay... that kid needs a lesson...
I've said to him I'll reserve my right of repainting my bumper before giving up this TL... And, he has to pay...

One on the right for me
Same thing happened to me last month. I was in a drive through and someone hit me...left two screw holes in my bumper. Called his insurance, cut me a check for the cost on a few bumper installed. No hassel and it was taken care of...

HELL NO....either file a claim or have him pay CASH to have your car fixed...it didn't come with marks from his car...so have him pay to have it fixed....not unreasonable at all!!!

I don't think its ridiculous. In fact, I think its a good thing - but in this case, I would just ask him to pay for the damage so it doesn't affect the insurance for either of you.

I had to wait 2 weeks for their claims adjuster to come out and look at the damage, but he wrote me a check for the total repair cost on the spot.
Cool - thanks for the info.

i got bumped in a parking lot 3 weeks ago. I got the initial estimate and it was 483. After they had my car they determined they couldn't fix the bumper, it had to be replaced. My repair bill went to 1200. (It was the other guys fault so it was all covered). I don't know if it was more b/c I have the radar in the rear bumper....

Question:
1. How much will it cost to repair the damage like that in the rear bumper? 1 screw or 2 screw marks... Repaint the whole bumper?
2. Lots of ppl have $500 or more deductible on their insurance. If the repair fee is lower than that number, will the insurance Co. cut the check for you?? Or, the insurance Co. will ask their customers to pay back or inform them of paying cash to you?

Its just 1 screw mark. The paint isn't even broken, its just a perfect indentation of a phillips screw head. I'll get an estimate asap.
Unfortunately all I got is the guys driver's license, name, insurance company and policy #. No phone number or other contact info, so I'd have to go through the insurance. ugh.
At this point, I'm thinking I'll just wait until there is more serious damage to the bumper, of which I'm certain will happen soon enough. I live in San Francisco, people have no respect for other people's property.

Your call, but I would not let it go. My wife has been tapped TWICE while stopped at a light in the TL. Both times she called me and I went to check it out. The hit was so light that there was no paint damage or anything else visible so I let it go. Then one day I notice that at the sides (where the bumper cover meets the sheet metal) there is a slight difference from side to side. The bumper must have shifted a bit. Very, very slight, but if you know to look at it you can see it. I'm not too concerned because I know it won't be the last time.
Someone I know got tapped by some kid in a parking lot recently. The kid tried to give him $100 but he said "No way." After dealing with insurance he got $650 to replace the bumper cover. One good thing about going through the other guy's insurance is that you don't need to submit the afidavit saying the repairs were made. If you decide to just live with it you can keep the money. With your own insurance you need to submit the afidavit. Otherwise it there's future damage they'll deduct that amount from the payout, with the argument that you were already paid for that portion of the damage. If you submit the form stating repairs were made you start over from scratch. Some companies may even want to see the car to verify the repair.
