The e55 is a sweet ride but expensive on maintenance. I used to have an 06 evo9mr, I bought My type-s and love it. overall its an aswesome car-- luxory sports sedan cant go wrong

My wife ownes a 04/E500. It is hella expensive to maintain. From the $560 front brake job (and because of brake assist it has to be done by an certified mercedes mechanic with the proper equipment) to the $470.00 "D" maintenance it is a pricey ride. Now, on the other hand, it is blazing fast, and rides like a dream. It has everything my Tl has, plus adjustable ride height. Of course, the Navi is not as good as Acura's, but whose is ?
Personally, if I had $5K sitting around for maintenance, Id get the E55 also.
It is a bad ass car, and nothing like thrashing a vette with the kids in the back seat laughing and pointing (personal experience)

Dude, I remember in High School my buddy had a C32 AMG, I tracked it stock at 12.78...fucking fast as shit...The E55 hands down takes my pick over a TL-S any day bro. Can you say heated and cooling with massaging seats? lol

Just get an evo x w/ navi, slap an fpred in there and call it a day
Does the AMG come in a manual tranny? If not, that'd be reason enough for me to not want one.

thanks everyone for the info and comments, but im leaning goin to buy the type s due to money. if i had extra money laying around i would def get the e55. but i have a good friend that has a blue type s with 25k miles for around 22! i wasnt planning on buying a blue one but i dont think i can pass that deal up. The only thing is it has tan interior in which i wish it was black. all the other type s's around my area r goin for 30k at the dealerships.

I have a 07 TL-S and it's a bit costly to maintain...BUT...an E55 would totally burn a hole in your pocket if you don't make 100K+ a year. Think insurance too. I'm 26 with a clean driving record, so I get a pretty good rate from USAA. I almost bought a 2004 CLK55 AMG, but after getting a quote from my insurance company and talking with a Mercedes mechanic, I ran for the hills (the hills being an Acura dealership).
My TL-S couldn't compare to the CLK55 I test drove (it was insane) , but I stick by my decision. When I start making 150K, I'll think about the AMGs.
But seriously, if we're talking about dishing out 70K+ for a car...GTR baby...best bang for the buck.

BTW, i just read the posting about the E55's $500+ front brake job. Ok maybe the Acura dealership in Sacramento is f***ing with me, but they quoted me at around $320-350. I don't need brakes yet, but I figured I'd ask while I was there (received my A1/2 service for $200+ plus two front tires for $ TOO F***ING MUCH).

No I havent. But I replaced all 4 of my rotors (04/TL) with slotted and cross drilled, plus pads for $260.00. I did the work myself. I can't do the work on the Benz cause I cant get the PROPER manual for the work. I also dont have the machine to disable the brake assist on the Benz.

Dude, the auto is a 7 speed and has a sport shift mode and a auto 'sport mode' that shifts at the redline and holds gears for engine braking. its the same tranny thats in our e500. You push a button and its in sport mode and the shifts are crisp and with the traction control off it will chirp the tires.

very true without the proper manual i wouldnt try doing the job my self. im sure the changing the brakes on the tl is a breeze for me cuz i changed my evos and my old rsx type s so im sure its cake. the mercedes on the other hand i dk , never touched a german car before.

EvoToTL, I went from an evo to a TL and I have no regrets. Good luck with your purchase on the type-s!

for the benz theres a work around for everything....because if the computer dies... lets say...then how do u fix the car....you just need to know how to trick the car to let u fix certain things....like the brakes....they dont release until the car has settled for over 3 mins with the alarm on and all hinges closed. but if u take the car off all 4's open the doors and let it sit for 15 it releases its abs system and lets u do brakes without issues as an example.....resetting the computer theres another work around....u ground out 2 pins on some models.....on other u hold buttons on the steering wheel....etc etc. a friend of mine is a 20 yr master tech for them and he teaches me a few work arounds...my boss had a cl500 and id maintain it for him for a lil less than benz would =)

To the Original Poster, Buying an E55 may be easier than keeping it running, but if you can get it, Id say go for it. A V8 Mercedes really is a higher level of car, both in performance and in prestiege. The valets always put the Benz up front, and the yes sir, yes sir is flying all over the place, and other Benz drivers always smile and wave. Its pretty cool. Now, to be fair, I do get attention in my TL, but that may be due to the fact that it is always clean and shiney, and I have a reputation for that. The Merc, which is black on black, does not stay as clean as the TL, but gets more attention.

If you can afford it get the E55, but be forewarned the cost of high-performance MB parts is amazing.
A friend and his brother both have 500E Hammer's and the DBW throttle is $1.4K rebuilt! A set of cap/wires takes you for $350. Nothing is the least bit reasonable in cost for the parts, and both of the owners do most of their own work!

One of my college Frats had an 04 E500 sport for 3 years, he recently got rid of it as it was a maintenance and hurt the "pocket book" nightmare. The adjustable suspension collapsed 4 times leaving him stranded and he had a host of other issues, looking at C.reports the 03 and 04 E500's have a ton of black marks. As good as the E55 sounds I would stay away from it!

Buying a used sports car is stupid. Unless you KNOW the person who drove is like 80 y/o. People who drive sport cars and then sell them usually beat the cars to death so you have no idea how many problems you will when it's yours....
Btw I'm with the guy who suggested the GTR if you can afford a 70k car. The only other car that can prolly stay with a skyline is the ferrari enzo and that car costs like what 1 million lol?

I am considering an 06+ E55 or 05.5 S4 in addition to a TL-Type S. The first 2 though better have an extended warranty though. My buddy is a Mercedes mechanic and says that you should be prepared to spend at least $3k annually on maintenance. But if it has an extended warranty.....I'm all ears.
