Mercedes e55 amg or tl type s??
alright guys my evo is almost back to stock and ready to buy a new car within the next month! alright heres the deal. im attending the hondapact program to become a certified tech and will be out in another year but will get a job at honda within a year. I been searching for cars online and i have always love the 3g tl. i drove a type s the other week and the steering felt a little heavy and slow response. but i still love it. I been looking on autotrader and found like 10 2004 e55 amgs going for 30k. its a 90k car going for 30 now which is a steal but i wonder what the maintence is going to be and how much. what do u guys think?

e55 is a rocket. i have driven both and compared both. if price werent an issue i would of gotten the e55.
interior = TL
performance = e55
if you wanna mod the e55, you will go broke, ALOT of money for parts.
my friend has around 70k on his 05(i think) at it still runs good.
plus the s/c whine is awesome

thanks for the reply! i was actually on that forum yesterday looking at maintence and looking for problems with that car. i just hope insurance its much more than the tl. also ill prob just leave it stock for a while cuz i dont want problems. the tl's interior is alot nicer than the e55 for sure. i kno its goin to drink alot more gas than the tl and i was leaning more toward the tl since im goin to be working for honda.

yea plus the e55 i think is good for one thing just speed. its nice but i would have never bought that car brand new for 90k supposebly. the interior is crap for that price. and gas prices are supposed to be going back up so. i wish the tl type s had more of a kick. any of u guys had any problems with the tl? i been reading and alot of ppl were saying noises inside the car.

If you buy the TL you not be able to blame mechanical problems for selling it for the next 10-15 years. It's a Honda, enough said.
You can always modify the TL if 286hp isn't good enough. I think there are a couple of N/As that are making 300 whp. And like you said, the interior is pretty nice. Wait until you start working for Honda and you can probably get an employee discount.
With the Mercedes, you will have your fair share of mechanical/electrical problems, fuel economy, and expensive parts. But it's fking fast.
In short, it all depends on what your priorities are. If you don't mind shelling cash for maintenance and gas, and want a speed rush, get the e55. If you want a car that will last long, and one that you can get for cheap and maintain for cheap, get the TL.

E55 AMG might be more powerful, but if you're considering to keep it for a while say couple years, then you'll probably need lot of $$$$ prepare for maintenance, gas, and parts...
You gotta pay for it... after all it's different category....
You can't compare apple to orange...
TL Type S is a pretty good choice (feature, spec, performance, upkeep) ratio.

couldnt have said it any better. the cars looks nice IMO but the acura has more styling. BTW i love ur WDP Type S, urs is one of the reasons i want WDP but im leaning toward NBP since i cant find a white type s near my house. I kno the e55 is goin to be a expensive in the future. im planning on keeping the type s for a while i hope! i havent had a car for more than two years yet lol

For a more economic and practical car go for the TL. And working in a year at an Acura dealership, you'll enjoy the rebate on the parts.
Mercedes are just expensive to maintain. you may be able to get a 20 or 35% of the parts price but they are just hard to work on with the small space left under the hood and you probably won't have much warranty left on it while with the TL you are worry free from couple years.
Now if it was the SL 500, i"ll tell you to go for it, as long as it's not the 2003, but a Supercharge benz with pass warranty miles: nope

The AMG E55 will kill my TL-S any given day. I know cause by brother has one and he likes to fuck with my mind by blowing by me than stepping on his brakes to let me catch up and past him than blow right by me again. That is a heavy beast but it can haul ass. We went to visit there shop when we were in california and these guys build bad ass cars.
http://www.evosport.com/ if you got money to blow than these guys can build anything you want.

Yeah the Benz is going to be faster, like that was any surprise lol. I'd still rather have the TL though because like you said the car was 90 brand new and now its only 30. Now compare values of the TL vs the E55 after about a year or two and the TL will probably have a higher value

I have had my debaged TL taken for a benz. more that once. Yes, it isn't as fast. But the TL won't send you to the poor house if you have the modding disease! Like I do......
Take some advice from your "O'L sea daddy" don't bite off more than you can chew in one sitting! Life has a way of sneaking up on us.....

thanks for the replies everyone! i was reading on the maintenance on the e55 and yea its goin to get expensive. supposebly the car goes thru tires like nothing well it does has 515 tq stock so i would believe so. tires range from 800 to 1200 they said, and brakes are around 800 also since its 8 piston calipers. yeah im goin to pass on that deal. i dont want to deal with the headache its goin to give me in the future. but if it was a 2006 m5 lol i wouldnt be able to pass on that

I was going to say, is this really a fair comparison? The MB maintenance fees are going to kill you. It's a good car, but when something goes wrong....I hope you have plenty of $$ for repairs.

The E55 is not a daily driver, its a race car. If you're driving only 5-20 miles a day go with the E55, if you're going to drive more get the TL. TL is a mix with performance, quality, and luxury. Though I still wish the TL was RWD and that they would jump the TL to at least 300HP. Because when the TL was brand spanking new back then they were charging 38k for base TL with NAVI. It was a bit overpriced just like the current 4G TL with fully loaded for 44k.

Dont buy someone elses 'used' E55.. Thats ghetto! Not to mention this is 2009, you're looking at a 2004?? Buy something new.. Why people insist on buying old, used cars, is something I'll never understand.

U can't really compare the two. I think u'd be better of comparing the TL-S vs. G35 sedan but then the G35 is rwd so it's already a step ahead. Those were the 2 cars i was trying to decide between before i bought my TL. In the end after talking with the tech's at the shop i work at and doing a bit of research i went with the Acura.
The AMG is a perfromance monster not just for its 470 hp and 516tq but all around performance with speciffically recalibrated suspension, massive brakes on all 4 corners and computer tunning. This car will smoke the TL-S going backwards with 3 flat tires. There is so much more that makes the E55 a E55 then there is the TL-S. The technology in these cars is border line overwhelming. The E55 is rwd this is a huge advantage when making that much power. Can u imagine imagine triyng to hold on to the steering wheel on ure TL-S as ure going through a corner full out and u have 516tq to deal with? I know it seems like im a big rwd advocate but anyone here who owned rwd cars with over 300hp and tq will tell u the same thing. Fwd cars have a hard time steering and putting power down to the pavement.....thats just the way it is. Its not impossible just scary.
With that said which car u choose will depend on ur life style. If i had lot of money and could easily afford 2 cars i would get the E55 and keep it as a weekend driver. The reason why i wouldn't want it as a daily driver is because it does require maintenance not nececerally alot but when u have to do it u'll get a big bill. It's a no compromise car so u can't expect it to be cheap to maintain or repair. Just like any car the older it gets the more money ure gonna have to dump into it. Things will wear out and break and parts for these cars are not cheap.
Oooo 3 paragraphs. This is the most i typed since way back in high school many many years ago. Hmmm...didn't use a single coma. lol.

thats strange, because my car's steering is VERY responsive. maybe you should try another Type-S?
but i agree with the majority of the replies in this thread. E55 if your rich, and TL-S if your not.

Oh and on a side note the supercharged torque monster E55 is no longer available. It's now the naturally aspirated E63. So if u want the supercharged version i guess u can't have it );

thanks for the advice everyone but im goin to get the type s because its goin to be my daily and i know its goin to get expensive to maintain the e55 and for gas. i kno both cars are in different categories but i was comparing them due to the price.

SC TL to RS4 to 911
Ok coming from a Supercharged TL and pretty much doing everything you can to it... there is still that missing feeling, thats why I parted it out and sold it.... and bought a 07 b7 RS4 and just bought yesterday a APR chip which is suppose to gain 45-50 bhp and 45-50 torque so from factory stock 420 bhp and 317 torque, I hope to see around 465-470 bhp and 362-367 in torque!! Sorry.... anyways back to the point get the e55!!! Nothing beats German engineering!!
just the heads up ...its going to cost a lot to up keep like everyone has said....mine alone is bad..
$130 for a oil change
$450 just for brake pads
and if there is a major issue your looking at anywhere around 2k+

The 05 E55 is a good car. For 30k you will be around 70k+ miles tho. I would hesitate on any AMG over 50k mi. You would want to see the entire service history before you buy an AMG that's out of factory warranty.
For the price, I'd agree with the Type-S. Comparable used to used, the TL is a much smarter choice.

if your goin to become a Honda Tech i would go with the TL..the E55 is a beast like mentioned above but also expensive to maintain....since your asking for an opinion im gonna say TL Type-S>E55 economically and in maintenance costs and no to mention you gettin a discount after u start working for honda...
