Mental Illness/Burden
I love my TL.
I park my car at the end of parkinglot away from all the rusted down trucks and crappy smelly other useless cars that can ding my beloved TL...then I walk all the way across the parkinglot in the heat of Arizona, sweating buckets.
I wrap my car with a cover and lock it up in the bottom every time I park it in my house. I look out the window every couple of hours at home just to make sure no one is messing with it.
When I go for coffee...I park my car at the end of the parking lot....and I walk to the starbucks....buy my coffee....look out the window every chance I get....
I think I'm going insane....
Let me tell you.... I am the last person you'd think would become this obsessive compulsive.
I am so careless with everything in my life....
My dad would get a new car every 4-5 years because I would run it into a tree....or parking post....lamp post....etc etc.
All my stuff is beaten and I replace it again and again...
It's been a week....I don't know how long this mental burden will last.
It's just so not like me.
Maybe it's because I've been driving crappy cars all my life.
They're so comfortable since you can run it into a ditch and you won't blink an eye.
My TL is killing me.
It's like having a teenage daughter.
How long did it take you guys to get over this psychosis?
I think I need therapy.

That's how I was when I bought my first new car. I am less obsessed with the TL than I was with my first new car. After a year, when the car gets scratches and dings, you'll probably be less cautious with it. Everyone is different though.

Welcome to the forum.
I had a friend who bought his first car and it was a Supra.
He would sleep in his car when he had it in Brooklyn, NY because he was afraid someone would steal it...
He would drop it off at his parent's house in NJ when he gets a chance...
I made fun of him all the time.
Funny how it happened to me....

honestly the feeling never changes, it may become somewhat less compulsive but the desire to have something nice and keep it that way is always there. I have been like that all my life and then I got married and my wife just parks anywhere and gets dings and if friggin kills me. I try to keep her along with my self in nice rides and she doesn't give a hoot. Park close, run the nose over a curb, etc etc. I have gotten so I just look the other way in regards to her car. I still take pride in mine. I understand your friend in Brooklyn, I was in Queens and had my car stripped twice, and from then on I could not become less paranoid of something happening to my car
I have had my TL for 15 months and I still obsess and park at the back. I do have rock chips on the front, but for some reason I'm not as obsessive about those as I am about door dings. There's just something about walking up to your car and seeing those scraps and small dents that just makes my blood boil. Rock chips are unaviodable unless you just don't ever drive the car, plus I just got a clear bra to minimize any further damage. I'll probably be parking at the back for the foreseeable future. I need the exercise.

It's been a year and 2 months now and I still obsess over my car. It could be new or old, I still like to take care of my possession. And with each mod being added on to my car as I accumulate more cash flow, it's making me more obsessive.
And my co-workers make fun of me for parking all the way at the top of the parking deck and away from everyone else when we head off to lunch, but my car still looks pristine . . . and that's all that matters

...and will likely not change much with each vehicle we get. My psychiatrist wouldn't have it any other way.
just about every time i park i stay clear of soccer mom cars, redneck pickups & old people cars. if i go to Starbucks or something it's like my car whispers into my ear telling me to keep an eye on it. this is my 2nd TL & i'm worse now than before. even a bird dropping or some jerk driving in front of me using the windshield washer will almost ruin my day.
after all the craziness i put myself through, i got bumped into @ a red light & i have a small indent of a plate frame in my otherwise flawless back bumper. it turned me into a jerk because i can't let it go & it will cost the other person $1,000 to replace the bumper.
I usually park far away but that may work against you because bums & bird ladies hang out in lots too. i park at the end of a lot & found the spot getting smellier by the day. u may not realize the amount of filth you bring into your sacred car.
after 1 month of owning my 06, i had a rattle in the door that was caused by a wall scraper. someone must've tried to slimjim the lock & dropped the wedge.
so, that distant, shady spot may hurt more than help.

I'm 34yrs and I had your mental illness ever since I had my first BMX Mongoose Dirt Bike, which gradually went to every car that I ever own. On my breaks at work....I will do the something that you would do, walk by my TL and stare at it from all angles. Some people would asked what am I doing, I tell them that I'm having a creative moment right know. My wife tells me that I'm like that VW commercial from 3yrs ago.....when the guy parks his VW Jetta way across the parking lot and someone pushes a shopping cart towards his VW and he dives towards the shopping cart to save his beloved Jetta, my wife says that I'm compulsive like that. Now she says I'm like the new VW commercial....when the guy and his wife are in the Golf GTI and he's listening to the engine and his wife is trying to conversant. He tells his wife can you stop your yaking!!! I'm trying to listen to the engine. There are so many of these commericial that represent us and our vehicles, compulsive disorder commericials.....who cares!!! just as long it makes me happy.

Being a little protective of a new, relatively expensive car is normal. Just don't cross over to obsessive-compulsive disorder and you'll be fine. I use to park old car on the 2nd floor of the garage for work, where everyone else is. Now, I'm on the 4th floor.. there are probably only 2-4 other cars up there.
Nothing wrong with caring about your car, but if the obsessing starts worrying you or interfering in other things then it's time to do something about it. But it's only a week old, that's pretty n ormal to me.
You're talking about it is very healthy. Don't let it spoil enjoying the car or other aspects of your life. Dings are gonna happen.
I may be semi-obsessed, mostly just hate careless people that ding it. I just had a girl back into my rear bumper and break the taillight out when my car was parked. Not that stressful to me, accidents happen. But I decided to get all the door dings taken out while it was in the body shop and now my 03 CLS looks brand new, so I have a some new car obsession again since it has no dings now. I'll hate it when I get one, oh well, some people are careless.
Good luck, don't let it spoil your fun!

I was never really extremely obsessed with my TL, but that's not to say that door dings and other damage to my car do not bother me. When I get my garage queen--an NSX, F430, or the like--THAT'S when I will develop OCD for my car.
It's been two years and four months since we got the car and my husband still obsess about it. It almost seem like he get off about the car lol, if he could wash it every day he would. I have to tell him all the time that he can't control the weather, it gets on my nerves though how he obsess about the car.

plus I have to make sure the gas cap is hooked onto the door properly.
